Former student Suzann chosen by Universities UK for '100 Faces' Campaign

Categories: School of Health and Society

Former University of Salford student Suzann Harrison has been selected to appear in a national campaign led by Universities UK, celebrating her extraordinarily successful career since graduating.

Universities UK’s 100 faces campaign celebrates the achievements of first-generation university students and calls for greater maintenance support for future applicants.

Suzann completed her Masters in the School of Health and Society at University of Salford in 2012, and earned the rare title of Queens Nurse in 2021 for her work transforming Crisis Response in community nursing.

Commenting on being highlighted in the Universities UK campaign, Suzann said: “I am so pleased to support such a worthy cause. University of Salford was a brilliant place to learn and grow, and my teaching staff and tutors were second to none. Thanks to them all for setting me on the right track to start on my career in healthcare.

“Anyone out there who has no other family members who have been at Uni and who might be feeling a bit nervous - I can’t recommend the friendly and supportive atmosphere at Salford highly enough. Go for it!”

She was the first in her family to attend university and has risen quickly through the nursing ranks. She is now an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in the NHS. As well as her work developing the Manchester Triage System for Crisis Response with Local Care organisations, she co-founded support group Stockport Sands for bereaved parents - raising thousands of pounds for the charity.

Extensive new research commissioned by Universities UK with over 6000 UK graduates shows that without financial assistance, 4 in 10 ‘first in family’ students would not have been able to afford to go to university in the first place.

Vivienne Stern MBE, Chief Executive of Universities UK, commented:“In this country you are still twice as likely to go to university if you are from the wealthiest background, compared to the least wealthy. That’s not right.

“I believe we have a responsibility to keep working to ensure a wider range of people in the UK get access to the potentially transformative experience of going to university. For that to happen, we really do need to see an improvement in maintenance funding to support those from the least privileged backgrounds.”

The University of Salford is very active in encouraging prospective undergraduate students whose families have not had any experience of university. Its Plug Into Salford campaign provides £1100 as a bursary for use in the first year.

It also works extensively with IntoUniversity which supports young people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods to attain their aspirations including further and higher education.
