Revolutionary new mobility product developed in partnership with the University of Salford

The revolutionary Walk Safe®, a transformative new indoor walking frame design that could benefit the lives of thousands of users, has been launched by mobility aids provider NRS Healthcare in partnership with the University of Salford.

Previous research at the University found that standard walking frames were difficult to use and unstable as they needed to be lifted over thresholds and during turns, putting users at risk of falls. The research concluded that, to improve stability and safety, the walking frame must remain on the ground during all activity.

A two-year research program developed a new prototype with swivel wheels, tested it in gait laboratories and care homes, and showed that not having to lift the frame generally increased users' safety and stability when crossing thresholds and doubled stability when turning.

During a small-scale clinical trial, this prototype was recommended over Zimmer frames by physiotherapists. Care home trial users found the prototype easier to use, and were able to adapt to the new frame with minimal training. This is especially important for users with cognitive impairments such as dementia.

The Walk Safe® is designed to significantly enhance daily living and independence for a wide range of users with limited mobility, ensuring a greater level of stability than is currently offered by other walking frames on the market. It features large front swivel wheels and rear gliders that easily slide over surfaces, making navigating tight spaces and turning corners effortless. Safe and controlled stops are provided by the easily activated pressure brake.

The project is the result of a knowledge transfer partnership (KTP), a three-way partnership between a business, an academic institution and a highly qualified researcher. Going beyond simply providing access to academic expertise, KTPs drive impactful transformations for businesses, from local firms in Greater Manchester to national industry leaders and international organisations.

Sibylle Thies, Associate Professor/Reader in the University of Salford’s School of Health and Society said: “Being an academic partner in a KTP that, through collaborative research, has led to major innovation in the walking aid sector has been a thrilling experience. The success of the project is without doubt the result of the effective partnership between NRS Healthcare and the University of Salford, which overcame major challenges to deliver the work to the highest standard.”

Susan Bevan, Clinical Excellence Technical Lead at NRS Healthcare said: “This is the most significant innovation in walking frame design in 70 years. We are very excited as we believe this will revolutionise the mobility and safety of walking frame users.”

The Walk Safe® is available to buy exclusively on Complete Care Shop and comes in two sizes (M and L).
