Welcome FAQs
We have tried to answer as many questions as we can about your welcome, registration and induction to the university. If you still have a question, you can get in touch with us, our contact details can be found at the bottom of this page.
How do I register?
The majority of students complete registration in full through our online registration portal. The portal will guide you through the process step-by-step until you are fully registered.
If you are an international student you may be required to provide the University with your immigration documents. The online registration portal will make it clear whether this applies to you and explain what you need to do.
What do I need to register?
You will need:
- An unconditional offer to study with us
- Your student ID number (e.g. @00123456) and PIN number (e.g. 123456) which will be sent to you via email or text message shortly after your place has been confirmed and online registration is open
- To upload a passport-quality photo for your ID card
- To confirm how you will pay your tuition fees. If Student Finance are paying your fees on your behalf, this will automatically update on your account. If you are experiencing problems with this our Tuition Fees and Awards Team can help
- To confirm your Right to Study (for international students, and those with a nationality outside of the UK and Ireland).
I haven't received an email about registering - what should I do?
- Check that you are holding an unconditional offer on the portal you applied through (i.e. UCAS Track)
- Check your junk or spam folders to ensure your email hasn’t been blocked or filtered
- Add registration@salford.ac.uk to your safe senders list to avoid missing important information about registering
- If you can’t see any reason why your email hasn’t been received, you can let us know and we’ll resend it to you.
Is there a deadline to register?
It’s really important that you register promptly and before the start of term. This is to ensure you start your programme on time and don’t experience a delay in receiving any funding you have applied for.
If for any reason you feel you will be unable to register on time, you should contact your School Office or Research Administrator as soon as possible for advice. Your School/Research Administrator will consider your request and, if necessary, make arrangements for you to register late. Take note of the deadline given to you, as you will not be able to access the online registration portal beyond that date.
When will I get my student ID card?
If you are starting a new programme (even if you have studied at the University before), you will be asked to order an ID card through the online registration portal. Make sure you upload a passport-quality photo when ordering your card to ensure we can produce your card quickly. Please note the on-screen instructions for the photograph format, as you may be charged for any reprints.
Once you have completed your registration, we will contact you via your student email account advising how you can receive your student ID card.
I'm a distance learning student, how and when will I receive my student ID card?
Only once you have completed all registration steps will you have full access to your student email and the Blackboard VLE system, including your class timetable and module/course information. We will then contact you via your student email account advising how you can receive your student ID card.
I'm getting an error message when I try to register. Can you help?
This could be due to several reasons. We have listed some of the common errors below with some guidance on what to do next.
Fees could not be calculated
- We are working to calculate your tuition fees and determine how fees will be paid. The Tuition Fees and Bursaries team will be notified automatically of your error and will be in touch with you directly to resolve the issue and help you to register. Log out of the portal for now and wait for further information.
Not eligible to register – registration deadline passed
- You are trying to register after your programme start date. You will need to contact your School Office (for taught programmes) or your Research Administrator (for research programmes) in the first instance to request permission to register late.
Not eligible to register – no progression information
- Your school is yet to confirm your progression onto the next year of your programme. You will need to contact your School Office (for taught programmes) or your Research Administrator (for research programmes) in the first instance to resolve the issue.
Unable to determine programme of study/residency
- One or two details may be missing or incorrect on your student record. Please contact the Registration Team to resolve the issue by calling +44 (0)161 296 0023 (option 3, then option 1) or send an email to registration@salford.ac.uk.
Not eligible to register – registration holds in place (Right to Study check)
- If you are an international student or have a nationality outside of the UK or Ireland, you may be required to provide the University with your immigration documents. The online registration portal will make it clear whether this applies to you and will guide you through the process.
- If you have any questions about this, you can contact the Home Office Compliance team by telephoning +44 (0)161 296 0023 (option 3, then option 2) or emailing homeofficecompliance@salford.ac.uk.
I am a self-funding student, how do I pay my tuition fees?
Visit our how to pay your fees page for details on the different payment methods we accept.
I'm a student who doesn't pay fees but I have been asked about fee payment during online registration
We're sorry this has happened. Please email our Fees and Awards Team with your full name, student ID number and a brief explanation as to why you shouldn't be paying tuition fees, and a member of the Fees and Awards Team will look into this for you.
I'm trying to register online but don't have my sponsor letter with me. What should I do?
You will need to log out of online registration until you have obtained your sponsor letter. You should email a copy as soon as you have it to income-treasury@salford.ac.uk.
Once your sponsor letter has been received and processed, you will be able to log back in and complete online registration the next working day.
If you are struggling to get your sponsor letter, the only way that you can complete registration is by setting up an instalment plan as a self-payer, on a temporary basis. No money will be debited from your account upfront and once you provide a sponsor letter then the instalment plan will be cancelled.
To discuss this further, please contact the Income and Treasury Team using the details above, or telephone them at +44 (0)161 295 0023 (option 2, option 1).
I haven't yet applied to the Student Loans Company for tuition fee funding. What should I do if I want to register?
If you have not yet arranged your student loan, the only way that you can complete registration is by setting up an instalment plan as a self-payer, on a temporary basis. No money will be debited from your account upfront and once you provide confirmation that the Student Loan Company (SLC) will pay your fees, your instalment plan will be cancelled. In the event that your loan is not approved, you will become liable to pay your own tuition fee.
I have been asked to provide a letter proving that I am a student. Where can I get one?
Once you have completed online registration, you will be emailed a proof of study letter, detailing your name, address, programme of study, the programme start date and your expected end date. Students on full-time programmes will also be emailed a council tax exemption letter. You may request an additional copy of either letter at any time through the askUS section.
How do I access the university network and my university email account?
You will be asked to set up your network access as part of the online registration process. You will be presented with a network username and will be asked to create your own unique password. Make a note of the details and keep them safe!
Only once you are fully registered will you gain full access to University network PCs and WiFi on campus, and your student email account.
Learn how to access your IT systems at Using Salford Systems.
If you have any problems, please contact the IT Service Desk on +44 (0)161 295 2444 or email digital-itservicedesk@salford.ac.uk.
I'm an international student, can I register if I don't yet have my visa?
No, all students are required to complete a face-to-face appointment with the Compliance Team to provide the documents confirming their right to study before online registration can be completed.
If you have any queries whether this applies to you, please contact the Compliance Team by telephone at +44 (0)161 295 0023 (option 3, option 2) or send them an email at homeofficecompliance@salford.ac.uk.
How do I apply for student funding?
Visit the Student Finance (gov.uk) page to find out about how to apply for your student funding. The application form is available on the website, along with guidance notes. If you need further help, Student Finance England can be contacted on +44 (0)300 100 0607. Remember that you must re-apply for your funding each year. Make sure you submit your application on time - a few months in advance of the start of your academic year. You are able to apply for funding at any point in the academic year, but earlier is better!
You may apply to Student Finance England if you are ordinarily a resident in England. Alternatively, you will have to apply to Student Finance Wales, Northern Ireland or SAAS (Scotland) if you are normally a resident elsewhere. If you initially applied for a different university, please call Student Finance and the university's Fees and Awards Team as soon as possible to inform them that you will be now studying at the University of Salford.
When will I receive my maintenance loan?
If you have been successful in securing a maintenance loan you should have received a ‘Students Entitlement’ letter from the Student Loans Company (SLC) detailing how much you will receive and when you should expect each payment. You should be able to access a copy of this letter from your personal SLC account.
The maintenance loan will be paid directly to you in your own bank account, so check that these details are correct. Payments are made three times a year and are normally around the start of each term.
Please note students have to complete their registration first before the University can submit an electronic Confirmation of Registration to Student Finance, which will trigger the release of any scheduled funding.
You can find further information here from Student Finance England.
Will I get extra funding if I am a parent or have caring responsibilities?
Eligible undergraduate student parents, or those who have caring responsibilities, can apply for the following grants from Student Finance England:
- Childcare Grant - this is additional income-assessed funding to help students with children pay the costs of childcare during study. For the 24/25 academic year the maximum grant per week is £193.62 for one child or £331.95 for two or more children, or up to 85% of their costs, whichever is less.
- Parents’ Learning Allowance - this is additional funding to help students who are also parents. It covers up to £1,943 per year for travel and course costs (not available for NHS students).
- Adult Dependents’ Grant - this is additional funding to help students who are financially responsible for another adult. The maximum grant for the 24/25 academic year is £3,438 per year.
Can I get extra help as a disabled student?
If you have any kind of disability, we advise you to contact the Disability Inclusion Service via disability@salford.ac.uk or by calling +44 (0)161 295 0023 (option 1 then option 2) to arrange an appointment to discuss your study-related needs and any funding that may be available to support you.
Students who are recommended a computer through Disabled Students’ Allowance will be required to contribute £200 towards the cost. However, there is support available through the Salford Support Fund for those from low income households.
I need to open a bank account and the bank has informed me that I need a letter from the university - what do I do?
We can provide registered students with a bank letter detailing your name, address, programme of study, start date and end date. You may request the letter through our askUS section.
Please note that this cannot be used as evidence to verify your address with the bank. Our bank letters detail a disclaimer at the bottom of the page stating that the University is unable to verify the student's term time address. The reason for this is that each student is responsible for updating their own address and may change their address with no evidence at any time through our website. If you have been asked to provide evidence of your address, please refer to the bank to which you are applying for a list of suitable documents.
If you have not yet completed registration you are still able to request a letter but please be aware that it may not be acceptable for the purpose for which you require it. The letter will state that you are ‘eligible to register’ as opposed to a ‘registered student’.
Are there any financial support schemes available?
When you complete registration you'll automatically be given access to an Inspire account. The scheme is open to all students on an undergraduate degree based at the University, and gives you £150 of credit to spend in a dedicated online store. You'll be able to buy learning resources such as text books, electronics or stationery, to give you the best possible start to your studies here at Salford, or you can use the credit to buy students’ union society memberships. This scheme will run annually, meaning you’ll receive £150 of credits once you register each year of your undergraduate degree if based here on campus.
For students from low-income backgrounds and living in areas where participation in higher education is low, there will also be the opportunity to receive an additional £350 of credits, bringing the total to £500 each year. This will be based on your personal circumstances and will be assessed at the point of registering as a student. If eligible, the additional £350 of credits will be given to you as a separate payment later on in the academic year.
For further details on the scheme and to get an idea of what you can buy, visit the Inspire site.
I am a self-funded student; how can I pay my fees in full to get the 3% discount?
If you want to pay your tuition fees in full and receive a 3% discount, then you can do so during your online registration, or at Online Student Payments, or by bank transfer at Flywire. The amount you need to pay will be displayed immediately during online registration, or by logging into Online Student Payments or by contacting the Finance Team at income-treasury@salford.ac.uk.
Your first instalment will be due the month after your ‘official course commencement date’. So, if your ‘official course commencement' date falls in September then your first instalment will be taken 30/09/24.

I am a self-funded student, how can I set up a payment plan to spread the cost of my tuition fees?
Where you are asked for payment of your tuition fees during registration, you can set up a payment plan to cover your tuition fees in five consecutive monthly instalments. You will need to select ‘payment in instalments by debit/credit card’ and set up your instalment plan.
If your course start date is in March then the first instalment will be on 30/04/25. If your course start date is in June then the first instalment will be on 31/07/25.
International students can use a credit or debit card from your home country, and then if required you can change this to a UK card when you arrive and have opened a bank account. You can find details of how to do this at Paying fees - Self-funding students.
I am having problems paying my fees during registration, who can I contact?
Help is available online or on the phone - If you get an error message when entering your credit/debit card, the Finance team can assist – contact them at income-treasury@salford.ac.uk or +44 (0)161 295 0023 (option 2 then option 1).
If the error says 'card issuer declined’ then you may need to contact your bank to get approval for the transaction and then re-attempt it. Also please be aware that to set up your instalments you do need to have at least £1.00 in the account when you enter your card details for this to work.
For any other payment-related queries you can contact Finance, Monday to Friday 09:00 until 17:00 on +44 (0)161 295 0023 (option 2 then option 1) or email income-treasury@salford.ac.uk.
How do I arrange my student funding if I have come through clearing?
If you have joined the university through clearing and have your Student Finance funding linked to another institution, you will need to complete a Change of Circumstance of your Student Finance to correct this. Alternatively, you can contact the Fees and Awards Team with your Student Support Number (SSN) and they can action this on your behalf. What accommodation can I apply for?
We have partnerships in place with Campus Living Villages, consisting of Peel Park Quarter, John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts.
Check the Campus Living Villages website for any rooms that are still available for January, or those that become available as a result of cancellations.
If there is no availability, some examples of other student halls in the local area include:
I'm trying to book but it says that accommodation is full and I have nowhere to stay - what can I do?
If you're still looking for accommodation for January 2025 there are lots of options across Greater Manchester including houses, flats and purpose-built student accommodation, so you’re bound to find somewhere that suits your needs. For the latest information and advice please visit our askUS accommodation page.
What support is available to students in campus accommodation?
Campus Living Villages (CLV) works closely with our askUS student support service to ensure you are supported as you move in and with any changes you may experience whilst away from home.
For more information on support and advice available to our students, see the student support, health and wellbeing section below.
Where can I buy my weekly shop?
There is a Tesco Extra, Aldi and Lidl approximately 1.2 miles (a 20-minute walk) away from our Peel Park campus, and they're even closer to John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts. We also have a student store on Peel Park campus which stocks all of the essentials too.

What do I need to bring with me?
For Campus Living Ventures residents, their website has a handy FAQs page with a list of what is already provided in their accommodation and what students should bring with them, under the ‘Moving In’ section. For students staying in other student halls or private rental accommodation, please check with your accommodation provider/landlord before arriving.
If you're staying in shared accommodation, it’s a good idea for housemates to chip in a couple of pounds a week to pay for things you’ll all use, especially kitchen supplies such as washing up liquid, sponges and surface cleaner.

Where can I find my induction schedule?
The induction schedule will be published on the website when it's ready and you will also receive an email with a link to your schedule. If you are joining an International Foundation Year course, Salford Languages will contact you directly with details of your induction activities.
Where can I find a campus map?
You can find an interactive campus map for all our University buildings, car parks, cafés, university accommodation, public transport and buildings on our travel page.
How can I get to the University by public transport?
Take a look at the travel page, where you can find details of how to reach us by train, bus and using the tram.
Our main campus, Peel Park, is just over a mile from Manchester city centre and a five-minute journey by bus. Buses run every few minutes to the city centre, and if you're coming by train we’ve even got our own train station (Salford Crescent) on campus.
You can also travel between our Peel Park and Frederick Road campuses and MediaCity by public transport via the number 50 bus.
I will be travelling to university on my bike. Do you have secure storage facilities?
There are around 400 spaces to park bicycles across Peel Park and Frederick Road campuses. The majority are contained within secure shelters.
There is also a Cycle Hub with 300 spaces close to our MediaCity campus, operated by Transport for Greater Manchester.
How do I get to the university by car?
You can find instructions on how to reach us by car in the travel page.
Do I have to pay for parking on campus?
Parking on the University of Salford campus car parks is chargeable seven days a week between the hours of 09:00 and 18:00. To park on one of the campus car parks, you must do one of the following:
- Purchase a monthly/annual permit
- Pay by phone
- Pay and display a ticket on arrival
Be aware that parking on one of the campus car parks is on a first come first served basis. The purchasing of a parking session does not guarantee a space on any given car park. Parking, particularly at the start of term, is extremely busy so travelling to the University by other means is strongly advised.
Find more information on our parking on campus page.
I am studying at MediaCity - how do I get there?
Bus
The number 50 bus runs every 10-15 minutes from Manchester city centre via our main Peel Park campus, Frederick Road campus, and Salford Shopping Centre. To help plan your journey visit Transport for Greater Manchester's journey planner.
Tram
Trams run every six minutes between Manchester Piccadilly and MediaCity. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes. You can also catch services along the Eccles or MediaCity lines, which generally stop at Trafford Bar and Cornbrook (i.e. you can transfer at these stops from other tram lines). Plan your journey using the Transport for Greater Manchester's journey planner.
Bicycle
There are 300 cycle bays across the MediaCity site. To use them you need to register and purchase a Cycle Hub membership through Transport for Greater Manchester.
Car
For those who need to travel by car, a link road with the M602 motorway gives drivers the option to approach MediaCity from either end of Broadway. The M602 provides onward links to major routes leading in all directions. Please note that there is very limited parking at MediaCity.
What support is available for students with any wellbeing or mental health concerns?
Within our dedicated student support service, askUS, the Wellbeing and Counselling team are on hand to support you throughout your studies. We've created a Wellbeing and Counselling page to provide you with more information on our wellbeing service, including who to speak to about your mental health and guidance on how to ensure you remain supported once you start university.
Previous students tell us that getting support in place early or ensuring any existing support they had in place was transferred to Salford, really helped them to enjoy and succeed in their studies, so we would encourage you to start the process as soon as possible.
For more information, please call the Wellbeing team on +44 (0)161 295 0023 (option 1 then option 1) or email wellbeing@salford.ac.uk.
Further support is available from the Students' Union's peer support listening service Rafiki, where you can talk to our student volunteers. This can be face-to-face, online or by phone or video call. They can also signpost you to support services on campus or externally which can help.
We also have a dedicated Report It service. We hope that you won’t need to use it but if you do, please know that we believe that bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, sexual violence, discrimination, domestic abuse, stalking, physical violence, racism, microaggressions and hate crime are never OK. It is important to speak up so that we can act on it and support you.
To speak to someone at any time of day or night, you can contact the Student CareFirst phone line where you can access free and confidential counselling 24 hours a day, seven days a week on +44 (0)800 970 1080. Find out more on the Student Hub.
Student Minds, the UK’s student mental health charity, is also here to help you and has useful guides to help you navigate university life, with advice and tips before you start and also when you become a university student.
What support is available for students from under-represented groups?
The University of Salford offers a range of support and advice through our askUS service for care experienced young people, disabled learners, young carers and estranged learners (students who will be studying without family support). We will support you every step of the way, and as a student at Salford, you will have access to our counselling and wellbeing services to ensure you reach your full potential.
Students can also find support from several dedicated charities across the UK, such as Buttle UK who provide grants and assistance to vulnerable young people, Rees Foundation who strive to help care experienced individuals and Stand Alone who offer advice and support services to people estranged from their families.
In addition, there are a range of services available to you across Greater Manchester, and you can find the contact details for these and each university on the Greater Manchester Higher website.
If you have a disability, long term condition or Specific Learning Difficulty such as dyslexia we advise you to contact our Disability Inclusion Service via disability@salford.ac.uk or by calling +44 (0)161 295 0023 (option 1 then option 2) to discuss your study-related needs. The team can also support you in applying for Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) where further support might be recommended such as Non-Medical Helper 1-1 support, software and equipment.
It is never too early to request support. We encourage you to contact us as soon as you can in advance of your start date so we can ensure your needs are met, ready for you starting your course.
Students who are recommended a computer through Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) are required to contribute £200 towards the cost. However, there is support available through the Salford Support Fund for those from low income households.
