Studying Professional Policing at Salford
So you’ve applied to study Professional Policing at Salford, we've made you an offer, but you’re still deciding or have further questions?
We want to make sure you have all the information you need as you get ready to study at Salford. We hope the information below helps you in your decision making. If you have any further questions, simply get in touch with us here.
Why should you study Professional Policing at the University of Salford?
You will study a course that is designed by the College of Policing. This means that when you graduate, you can apply to a police force of your choice.
Our teams have excellent links with HMP Manchester, HMP Forest Bank, Greater Manchester Police, Salford Youth Offending Team and more.
We focus on providing you with industry experience and will ensure you benefit from these links, whether that be through placement opportunities, field trips, conference opportunities, surgeries, guest speakers and workshops.
You will be taught by ex-professionals including police and probation officers as well as active criminologists and sociologists.
You will work alongside students on other courses, for example, Social Work and Nursing, just as you would in the real world.
You will study a variety of subject areas including crime and society, cyer-crime, counter terrorism, investigation of serious crime, dealing with vulnerability and safe-guarding victims.

Student Support Services
We want you to enjoy your time studying here, but we understand that there may be times when you need a little extra support. Whether you need support with mental health and counselling, living costs, accommodation or just want a chat with our friendly Wellbeing Team, we are here to help. Find out more about all of the student services we offer.
Do I need to start researching before the course starts?
It is not essential that students prepare beforehand, our modules are designed to meet the needs of those new to the discipline and students who may have been introduced to them already through college courses.
When will I receive my timetable?
Personalised timetables are sent to students when they register in September. We try our best to keep your timetable sensible and avoid you being in every day of the week. There are no lectures on a Wednesday afternoon then so that students can participate in clubs, societies and extracurricular activities.
What will I do during induction week?
All students will be required to formally register and pick up their student cards. As a Professional Policing student you will have the opportunity to take part in induction sessions to help settle you into university life and familiarise yourself with the Criminology and Sociology department.
What's Salford like?
Salford is in the heart of Greater Manchester, but whilst it’s just 2km from the buzzing Manchester city centre, it has its own community feel.
If you enjoy the outdoors, then you'll find Peel Park, one of the first public parks in the country, conveniently located next to Peel Park Campus. It’s the perfect place for an afternoon walk or an early morning jog before your studies.
Culturally there’s lots to see and do - Salford is home to MediaCity and The Lowry, plus Salford Museum and Art Gallery is right on Peel Park Campus.
