Second book to be published by leading Salford academic

Categories: School of Health and Society

Dr Claire Mercer, Head of Radiography at the University of Salford has seen huge success this academic year. Following the launch of the new Centre for Medical Imaging in the university’s School of Health and Society, Claire is now set to release her second book.

Her first book ‘Digital Mammography: A Holistic Approach’, now on its 2nd Edition, received great recognition, leaving her inspired to write book number two; ’Clark’s Essential Guide to Mammography’, as part of Clark’s series of diagnostic imaging books. This is co-authored with Claire Borrelli, Head of Education and Clinical Training at St George's National Breast Education Centre and Radiographic Advisor to the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme.

When asked what inspired the contents of this book, Claire said: “Following my PHD, I wanted to demonstrate direct impact in practice. I wrote a chapter in the first edition of the ‘Springer’ book, which I also co-edited. This was then revised for the second edition and really focused into technique. This Clark’s book is highly illustrated with the aim to provide clear and reliable information promoting standardised approaches facilitating patient-centred care within the mammography workforce.”

Both authors spoke about the release, saying: “We hope that this guide will be an essential educational tool for trainees at all levels, and for universities delivering mammography education, and a convenient clinical guide for practicing mammographers, including assistant and associate apprenticeship students.”

Claire is not new to publishing, with 20 peer reviewed publications authored or co-authored in peer reviewed journals since 2015. She explained: “We have seen a growth in PhD students within breast imaging, as a direct result of the work that has been undertaken, published and presented at conferences. I was so pleased to see this. It is not only a direct impact from work that we have completed within the research teams but highlights the additional contribution to the growing workforce the University of Salford is making; this is important for our continued reputation”.

Claire recently opened the Symposium Mammographicum Conference in Glasgow in June 2023 showcasing her recent research with Lisa Garwood Cross and other colleagues around an Online Mammography Network.

Clark’s Essential Guide to Mammography will be released on Friday 14 July 2023. You can pre-order the book here.
