Categories: School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology

Two current University of Salford students and two new graduates have been named as launch presenters for a brand new regional radio station.

BA Media and Performance alumni Grace McIntosh and Lewis Magee have joined the launch crew with BA Broadcast Journalism students George Icke and Leonie Husselbee to combine their studies with presenting duties at High Peak 1.

High Peak 1 will be playing hit music for the people of the High Peak in North Derbyshire from their new studios in Torr Vale Mill.

George, who will present the weekend breakfast show on the station, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be getting the chance to present weekend breakfast across the High Peak at such an exciting time for new local radio stations.

“Radio is an incredibly intimate medium and I’m excited to put the skills I’ve developed at The University of Salford and Shock Radio into practice.”

Leonie will take to the airwaves in the weekend evening show to talk about the latest showbiz and entertainment news whilst former CBBC child actor and star of Channel 4’s The Dog Academy Grace will present the station’s daytime show and Lewis, who has also appeared on TV screens via ITV’s long-running soap Coronation Street will present High Peak 1 Evening Show.

Helen Mason, Lecturer in Media and Performance & High Peak 1 Station Director, said: "What a great opportunity it is as a lecturer to be able to offer graduates a career pathway in radio and for them to be able to use their presenting, content creation and media production skills to entertain the High Peak on their shows. I hope to be able to continue this link as the station grows in the future.

Craig Pattison, who is also a Station Director at High Peak 1 said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have so much Salford talent onboard our new station High Peak 1.

“As an industry we’ve seen so many radio stations be networked to London recently, and now we’re getting a chance to bring local radio back to the North West with talent from The University of Salford and their MediaCityUK Campus.”

The station will launch and be able to listen to on DAB digital radios in November.
