The New Year Honours list for 2025 recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom. The honours system recognises people who have made achievements in public life and committed themselves to serving and helping the UK.
A number of our alumni and colleagues received honours, including:
Actress and Honorary Graduate Sarah Lancashire has been awarded a CBE for services to Drama. The well-loved television and theatre talent has received numerous awards over the years for her outstanding work, including three British Academy Television Awards. Sarah was presented with an honorary Master of Arts in 2002.
Alumnus Peter Thompson has been awarded with a CBE for services to Science and Technology. Peter has been the CEO of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) since 2015. He graduated with a BSc in Applied Chemistry in 1989.
Alumna and Honorary Graduate Caroline Redman Lusher has been awarded an MBE for services to music and charity. The inspirational founder of Rock Choir graduated from Salford's prestigious Popular Music and Recording course 29 years ago and was awarded an honorary degree in 2024.
Alumna Judith Harvey has been awarded a BEM for services to the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. The Western Area Manager at the park studied a BSc in Civil Engineering then went on to graduate with a Master’s degree in 1983.
Finally, Visiting Professor Andy Sutton from the School of Science, Engineering and Environment has been awarded an MBE. Andy delivers lectures in computer science, data and mobile communications, alongside developing collaborative research opportunities and projects between Salford and industry. He is currently a BT Fellow and Principal Network Architect.
