MBE for Salford professor in New Years Honours

Categories: School of Science, Engineering and Environment

A visiting Professor at Salford who also volunteers in the Armed Forces has been named in the New Years Honours list.

Professor Andy Sutton, who is also a BT Fellow, has been awarded an MBE for his service to the UK for his work as an Army Reserve Officer, supporting Defence through his expertise in communications technology.

Andy delivers lectures in computer science, data and mobile communications, alongside developing collaborative research opportunities and projects between Salford and industry. And during his time at Salford he has taught on undergrad and postgrad courses as well as mentoring PhD candidates. He has also authored books and papers with Salford colleague Professor Nigel Linge.

Professor Sutton said: “I was very surprised when I discovered I’d been named in the honours list, it is quite remarkable really and a hugely proud moment for me and my family.”

Over his 11 years as a Visiting Professor at Salford with the School of Science, Engineering and Environment, Andy is a regular lecturer at the University and has worked on many successful projects, including the 2017 collaboration project with NEC and the University on the future of 5G technology, naming it “the most extensive testing we’ve ever undertaken”. He has had over 35 years of experience within the telecommunications industry, largely focussing on radio access, transmission and transport network strategy, architecture and design. Currently, Andy works at BT Group, as the Principal Network Architect with responsibility for the design of cellular (4G, 5G etc.), microwave radio systems, and satellite communications networks for the whole of BT.

And last year Andy was awarded the 2024 "Outstanding Contribution to Industry" award by the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals.

Professor Nigel Linge said: “Andy is one of the foremost experts on mobile and radio communications in the UK and it is both a privilege and honour to have him as one of our Visiting Professors.  He has made, and continues to make, such a valuable contribution to the University and wider industry.”

Professor Sutton will be presented with his MBE at a ceremony later this year at Buckingham Palace.
