Dr. Ruth Garbutt has been appointed as the new Head of Social Work for the School of Health and Society at the University of Salford.
Ruth is a qualified social worker, with a PhD in social policy which focussed on the area of disability and citizenship. Ruth has also undertaken a postdoctoral fellowship in social policy at the University of Leeds which looked at the views and experiences of people with learning disabilities around relationships and sexuality.
She has worked as a specialist social worker in disability and also in adoption/fostering. She has also worked in community development settings in the area of advocacy, participatory processes, physical disability/learning disability, and young people.
Ruth said: “I am really happy to be taking on the role of Head of Social Work. I am looking forward to leading and developing the work of this subject area and of working with such a fantastic group of committed, enthusiastic people.”
Professor Margaret Rowe, Dean of the School of Health and Society, said: “I’m delighted that Ruth has been appointed as the new Head of Social Work.
“Ruth is experienced social worker, who is highly respected in the field and has particular expertise in working with those with learning disabilities. Her experience and passion for social work and working with vulnerable people will be a huge asset to the school, further enhancing the excellent reputation that our social work team has.”
