Apprenticeship students secure two awards

Categories: School of Science, Engineering and Environment

Two University of Salford apprenticeship students have claimed awards thanks to their dedication and hard work.

Amelia Tweddle is currently doing an apprenticeship degree in Building Surveying, and Amy Witts is working towards a Quantity Surveying degree. Despite eventually graduating on completely different courses, the two share the same ambition and determination which has been reflected in the awards that they have received this year.

Amy was awarded the ‘Highly Commended Apprentice of the Year Award’ for her work on a new subcontractor system within her workplace at O’Connor Utilities. She played a big part in creating new material for over 200 employees in her workplace to learn the new system. The award was presented by G4C and held at Turner & Townsend in Manchester City Centre.

Amy said: “I didn’t want to come out of education completely, but still wanted to stay studying to a degree. I met representatives from OCU at a college event and now I’ve started full time! You get more experience when working than solely studying at the university. It’s a nice balance; I want to pursue this as a career!”

And Amelia is currently doing a Building Surveying degree and works at Bruntwood. She was awarded the Steve Burne Apprentice of the Year 2023 award at an event hosted by the Greater Manchester Chambers of Commerce. In September, Amelia will go into her third year at the University of Salford after working full time at the firm over summer. She said: “I am so pleased to have won this award! After working so hard it means a lot to be recognised by my employer and also by the judges.”

Gareth Whittleston, apprenticeship lead at Salford, said: “We couldn’t be more proud of Amelia and Amy and the recent recognition of their ability and meaningful contributions within the workplace.

“They are yet another example of our fantastic apprenticeship students, when given the opportunity at work, to demonstrate and apply industry relevant knowledge and skills learnt at university.  Congratulations to them both on their well-deserved success!”
