Join the Library

Students and staff are automatically given library access. There are schemes that may allow those that are not students or staff at the University to join.

Please note: In order for us to process your application, you will need to bring a form of photo ID with you to the Library. For the Community Access Scheme, we also require proof of address dated within the last three months.

Membership schemes

Alumni – We are delighted to provide free library membership for all graduates of the University of Salford. You will need to provide your alumni ID number in order to request your library card. If you do not know your alumni ID number please contact the alumni team at alumni@salford.ac.uk or call 0161 295 4265. Alumni can also sign up to From Salford – a website dedicated to the needs of University of Salford graduates.

Associate College – Free library membership for those attending a college or institution associated with the University of Salford.

Community Access Scheme – Free library membership for members of the public, aged 16 and above, who live, work or study in the Salford area. Post codes: M3, M5, M6, M7, M50 and M60. You must provide proof of your address when you collect your membership card. Membership is not transferable. It is your responsibility to notify our staff of any change of address or other contact details.

Interruption of Study students – Free library membership for University of Salford students who have interrupted their study.

NHS Trust Honorary Library Members – Free library membership for those who work within the NHS Trusts associated with the University.

SCONUL – The SCONUL Access scheme allows students or staff of other universities to borrow or use our books and journals.

Members can:

  • Enter University library facilities during open hours, however, restrictions may be put in place during peak assessment and exam periods
  • Borrow library items
  • Use the free Wi-Fi – ‘WiFi-Guest’

Members can't:

  • Book study rooms
  • Use the PCs or laptops
  • Use the online resources
  • Place requests using Library Search
  • Use the printing facilities

Borrowing

Members with borrowing rights can borrow up to four books at a time. A wide range of print journals and DVDs are also available for borrowing.

Please remember, there are charges for overdue items and not all items are available for borrowing by non-University members. You may use items that aren’t available for borrowing whilst you’re in the library.

Borrowing is not possible with outstanding charges on your library account.

Children

Children under 16 are welcome to visit with an accompanying adult, who must supervise them at all times. Please also be respectful of other users and areas such as the quiet floor when bringing children into the library.

The University of Salford Library cannot be held responsible for any injury sustained while on its premises.

Renew your membership

Your membership is valid for one year. After a year you must renew your card.

Please contact us (email: AskUs@salford.ac.uk or visit an Enquiry Desk) to renew your membership. You will need:

  • ID such as a Driving Licence or Passport.
  • Proof of Current Address e.g. a recent utility bill.

To renew SCONUL Access you will need:

  • ID such as a Driving Licence or Passport.
  • Proof of Current Address e.g. a recent utility bill.
  • Your SCONUL renewal letter.

Fill out our membership form

Completing the form starts the application process. The process is completed when you visit the Library to collect your card. Please allow 30 minutes for this visit. A member of the Library team will contact you with further details after you have submitted your application form.
