How will I study computing?
The Salford Experience Computing
Our computing courses are designed with your career in industry in mind. If you choose to study computing at Salford you will have plenty of opportunities to take part in practical workshop sessions, work on group projects collaborating, and have the option of doing a placement year in industry.
Read on to get a flavour of what to expect.
Lectures and Tutorials
Lectures and tutorials are a key part of building your knowledge base in computing. You will experience teaching from our highly-skilled lecturers, who have real-world experience in the field and are active researchers in their specialised area.
During your studies, you will experience a modern learning environment, with accessible lecture theatres and AV-equipped classrooms, computing suites and multimedia libraries, with access to industry journals, databases, and simulation software.
Practical Workshops
As a computing student you will have practical workshop sessions in our specialist computing suites, including a networking laboratory and dedicated final year project laboratory, to complement your lectures and tutorials. Throughout your course you'll experience practical workshops in areas including programming, AI and data mining, computer graphics and mobile development.
You will also have the opportunity to use Cisco-enabled facilities with the option to gain Cisco Certified Network Associate status.
Industry Events
Collaboration with industry is an important part of computing courses. In your second year as a computing student, you will start off trimester two with Hackcamp, a three-week long challenge developed by our academics and industry partners. You'll work with a team of students from across the computing courses to develop a web-hosted dashboard or application to meet an industry-set brief.
With support from your computing lecturers, you'll experience multiple client meetings and receive feedback on your team's work to refine your finished product. In the final showcase day, you will have the chance to give a final presentation to the client and network with all the clients involved. In the past some teams have continued to work with clients and see aspects of their work used in industry.
