Ian Rushton is Area Legal Lead for CPS North West. Until 2020, he was Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for the North West area.

Ian is responsible for ensuring CPS lawyers in the North West are regularly updated with developments in the criminal law. He reports directly to the Chief Crown Prosecutor on quality assurance of casework across the three counties of CPS North West - Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria.

Ian has worked for the Crown Prosecution Service since it began in April 1986. He was in private practice in Manchester prior to joining the former Prosecuting Solicitor's Department with Greater Manchester Police.

Ian was a Senior Crown Prosecutor in the City of Manchester until January 1993. He was then promoted to Assistant Branch Crown Prosecutor for Sheffield in South Yorkshire. He progressed to Branch Crown Prosecutor and held similar posts in Preston and East Lancashire before moving to Cheshire in November 2005. Here, he was appointed Chief Crown Prosecutor (CCP), and later held the post of CCP for Lancashire. In April 2011, Ian became one of the two Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutors in the North West.

Ian has been heavily involved in the recruitment of legal trainees. He has also been involved with the development and delivery of the CPS RASSO casework.

Ian was educated at The Manchester Grammar School and is a graduate in Law from the University of Nottingham.
