PhD
A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy, is a type of doctoral degree recognised as one of the highest-level academic qualifications that can be awarded. It's an entirely research-based degree which requires independent study in an area of your choice and results in an original contribution to your field.
You will be assessed by submitting a thesis and an oral examination (viva voce), where you’ll be required to defend your thesis to a panel of expert examiners.
HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE TO COMPLETE?
A PhD usually takes three-four years to complete if studying full-time and up to seven years part-time. It can be awarded in any subject area.
IS FUNDING AVAILABLE?
Postgraduate research students will need to pay an annual tuition fee for their studies. There are a range of funding options available including loans, scholarships and discounts, that could help with the cost of studying.
HOW DO I APPLY?
To apply for a PhD you will need to submit a research proposal which outlines the research project you would like to carry out.
Once you have thought about your research proposal, we recommend checking our staff page and research centres to make sure we have the relevant academic expertise in the field you’re interested in, as well as speaking to the school PGR team in the relevant subject area.
The full application process is done via an online application form. To find out more about the process, including who to speak to for help, and tips on writing a research proposal, go to our how to apply page.
