Biography

Paul is a research practitioner who has been actively involved in the field of urban regeneration since 2001. In practice, Paul is highly experienced in the field of urban heritage regeneration acting as client representative on a large number of complex urban regeneration projects from inception to post occupancy completion.

A particular area of interest is urban heritage regeneration, where Paul has acted as the senior development manager responsible for the successful delivery of RIBA award-winning Stubbs Mill, Manchester, and Grade II* listed Midland Hotel, Morecambe projects, from project inception to post occupancy completion. In addition to receiving both RIBA and Civic Trust awards, the Midland Hotel regeneration project was also awarded the RIBA Special Crown Estate Conservation Award for excellence in 2008.

Following a rewarding period, between 2001 and 2020, working for two notable urban regeneration companies based in the North-West of England, Paul founded, on a part time basis, Jones URC, an urban regeneration consultancy. Jones URC is currently acting as the client representative on a small number of urban regeneration and conservation projects in the North- West of England.

In relation to research activity, Paul has furthered his academic interest in urban heritage regeneration by self-funding a Professional Doctorate in the Built Environment that was awarded by the School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford in 2017. The focus of the thesis was the delivery of successful urban heritage regeneration projects involving private sector development organisations. Paul now lectures at the University of Salford in the subjects of urban regeneration, environmental impact, viability, conservation of the historic environment and urban regeneration at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

In 2021, Paul co-authored a journal article, published in The Historic Environment: Policy and Practice Journal, with Professor Heike Oevermann, Humbolt University, completing a comparative analysis study of best practice of adaptive reuse Textile Mill complexes in the North-West of the United Kingdom and the Rhine Region in Germany. Paul’s specific areas of research interest include adaptive reuse, low environmental impact built environment activity, and urban heritage regeneration.
