Specialist Technician
Biography
I graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in 2009 completing a BSc with honours in Microbiology, with a project on the study of fungal hyphae pulsing using an atomic force microscope. I went to work within the university for a short period as a technician and moved on to industry working for Unilever as a Microbiologist.
I went on to complete my MSc at the University of Liverpool in 2012 with a project focusing on Locations and affects of Eimeria species on deer mice.
In 2012, I undertook an industrially funded PhD with Professor Andrew McBain and Dr Gavin Humphreys at the University of Manchester, investigating realism-based studies for evaluating bacterial susceptibility to antimicrobials used in home and personal care products.
Following the completion of my PhD in 2016, I was appointed as a specialist teaching technician in molecular biology, microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Salford in January 2016 until October. After this, I moved back into industry for a short time working for Lonza until February 2017. I went back to the University of Salford as a specialist technician, transitioning into a specialist laboratory technician within microbiology in September 2017. I was promoted to a senior microbiology specialist technician in September 2021.
I teach on Level 4 Biomedical skills laboratory module and recently supervised Masters project students.
I research various pedagogical approaches to increase student engagement and attainment.
