Associate Dean (International)

Biography

I am Dr Naomi Sharples is the Associate Dean for Academic Development and International in the School of Health & Society, University of Salford, and the School operational lead for Workforce Development. Naomi is a nurse by background with NMC registrations in Learning Disability Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Nurse Tutor. Naomi has a Degree in Linguistics, and MBA, PGCert and is a Senior Fellow of Advanced HE.

With over 23 years of experience in UK Higher Education, 20 years of strategic leadership in the university and college sectors I have developed a focus on academic leadership, inclusive education and workforce planning and development, working regionally, nationally, and internationally.

I am a governor for Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust and a governor for Bury Further Education College. I also sit on a range of Greater Manchester workforce boards to bring the education focus to workforce demand, supply and development.

I am currently leading an Action Learning programme as part of the WHO and NHSE ‘Working 4 Health 2030’ programme. Working with a number of health workforce leaders across 15 Low to Middle Income countries to support their development of human resources for health.
I am also working closely with colleagues in Bangladesh as they develop their health professions education offer, to meet global demands, through the adoption of an enquiry based pedagogy.

I am responsible for developing our home and international stakeholder relationships to support the development of the workforce through curriculum design, development of student progression, student exchanges and international experiences, developing mutually beneficial international partnerships to enhance student study opportunities, including split site doctorates and associated research opportunities.

Teaching

My clinical background resides in mental health nursing, and specifically in working with Deaf people with mental illness through BSL.
My role as clinical leader and supporting qualifications led me into teaching leadership, management, organisational transformation, and work force development.
My teaching and learning focuses on inclusive education and access to learning.
I work with colleague in implementing inclusive learning - particularly focusing on Universal Design for Learning.

Working with international students - I focus on access, ensuring equity of support, and supporting staff in working with students who have experienced different educational paradigms.

Current interests particularly in AI as a means to further support access to learning.
