Biography
Lecturer in visual effects
I am the programme leader for the BA in Post Production and Visual Effects at The University of Salford, based in Media City. I previously lectured at Leicester De Montfort University and Leeds Beckett University and have taught on the VFX Bootcamp at University of York.
Visual effects supervisor
I have 25 years’ experience taking visual effects from the script stage, through breakdowns and storyboards, on set supervision, to completed work in both film and television.
I have supervised teams of compositors, and 3D artists, and also covered smaller projects where I have dealt with all aspects of the effects work myself. I have worked with motion control, supervised effects edits, data transfer, and have handled the budgeting. Work has been on both feature films and television series.
I am a good communicator, especially on set, I am able to make decisions under pressure if the schedule is compressed, or the director's needs change. I am aware of what is the bottom line for effects shots, and how this affects the rest of the shoot. Although I am happy to compromise, I will make those above me aware of when this will seriously affect the resulting shot, and give options to change the shot, reschedule, or if necessary to drop the shot.
I am comfortable directing actors (provided the director is happy with that) and crew, and have directed second unit and effects shoots.
Compositor
I have used Nuke for the last 14 years, and have used node based compositing systems since the mid 90's. I have covered both 2D and 3D compositing, including working with tracking and motion control data as well as a great deal of experience with morphs.
Matte painter
Matte painting and set extension work, including 3D texture building has covered both film and television projects. Principally in Photoshop, but also using Matador.
General
I have also studied typography and done title work and both film and TV, as well as motion graphics at Oasis Television for BBC, Channel4, ITV, and have also done some web design.
