Biography
Caroline Morton is a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing at the University of Salford, with over 14 years of experience in both clinical and academic settings. She has led major curriculum reforms and pioneering innovative placement strategies, including regional collaborations within the prison system.
Caroline's academic qualifications include an MSc in Leading Education for Health and Social Care Reform (Distinction) and a BSc (Hons) in Mental Health Nursing from the University of Salford., as well as being a Fellow of Advance HE Her research interests focus on perinatal mental health, student mental health, and the recruitment and retention of nursing staff. Caroline has published on nursing students' experiences of seeking mental health support and the preparation of the future nursing workforce for perinatal mental health.
In her academic roles, Caroline has served as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing. She has demonstrated leadership in strategic curriculum development, project management, and change management. Caroline co-led the development of a pioneering multi-module accelerated entry pathway for Pre-Registration Nursing, and led major modifications to the curriculum for pre-registration mental health nursing programmes though NMC approval.
Caroline's clinical experience includes roles as a community mental health nurse, deputy ward manager, and staff nurse in various settings, including perinatal mental health services and prison healthcare. Her practical experience enriches her teaching, providing students with invaluable insights into the complexities of mental health nursing.
Caroline is also actively involved in research and publication. She is affiliated with the Early Career Researchers and Mental Health & Neurodiversity Research Group, where she leads writing support sessions. Her recent research projects include evaluating the impact of family learning programs for parents and carers of children with neurodevelopmental conditions.
Caroline's commitment to excellence in education and research, coupled with her extensive clinical background, positions her as a leader in the field of mental health nursing. She aims to inspire and mentor the next generation of nurses, fostering a culture of innovation and compassionate care.
Areas of Research
Caroline Morton's research interests are centered on enhancing mental health outcomes through innovative educational and support programs. She focuses on perinatal mental health and has previously explored effective interventions and support mechanisms for parents and carers of children with neurodevelopmental conditions.
Caroline is also dedicated to improving student mental health, investigating the experiences and challenges faced by nursing students in seeking mental health support.
Additionally, her work addresses the critical issues of staff recruitment and retention in the nursing profession both clinically and in academia, aiming to develop strategies that foster a supportive and sustainable work environment. Her research is characterised by a strong commitment to evidence-based practice and collaboration with diverse stakeholders to ensure impactful and relevant outcomes.
