Mr Brodie McAdam
School of Science, Engineering & Environment
Current positions
Interim Dean of SSEE
Biography
I started my career as a solicitor, and for the majority of my time in practice I was a dispute specialist, focussing latterly on construction projects. I joined the University of Salford in 2006 to develop and launch an MSc/LLM in Construction Law & Practice, and I lead that programme until 2016. At Salford I have lectured on a range of built environment legal topics including health and safety legislation and land law, but my key disciplinary expertise relates to Construction Law, both contract and tort, with a dispute resolution slant. I also managed the large built environment Post Graduate MSc Dissertation module for a number of years. Over my time at the University I have carried out a number of management roles including School Academic Misconduct Officer, Subject Head for Construction & Management, Director of Built Environment and Acoustics, Director of Sustainable Built & Natural Environments, and latterly as Interim Deputy Dean of the School of Science, Engineering and the Environment.
Externally I have acted as peer reviewer for a range of academic journals; Associate Editor of the International Journal of Law in the Built Environment; Co-ordinator of the North West Branch of the Society of Construction Law; visiting lecturer at the University of Melbourne; and External Examiner at Trinity College, Dublin.
Areas of Research
My research interests relate to construction law and legal pedagogy.
The main focus of my teaching has been relating to construction contracts at masters level. I am particularly interested in how contracts work in the real world, and how underlying legal principles interact with standard forms. I have also lead on research methods relating to law related projects, and research ethics.
