Biography
Andrew Clark is a senior lecturer in environmental assessment and management with over 30 years’ experience in teaching and research. He is an affiliate member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and works closely with this professional body on educational initiatives. He has successfully achieved IEMA accreditation for two MSc programmes, recently securing reaccreditation. His teaching and research interests encompass environmental impact assessment, air quality, water pollution and contaminated land together with work on business approaches to sustainability. He has developed and delivered over 250 industry-based projects with a range of partner organisations from the public, private and third sectors on a wide range of issues including life cycle embodied carbon in building service products, industrial application of sustainable technologies such as rainwater harvesting, research into the on the air quality benefits of green infrastructure and contaminated land investigation for food growing sites. He has developed a range of innovative work-based learning activities that connect students with organisations and companies to implement the sustainability agenda and was the recipient of a Vice Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching award acknowledging the quality of this work. He is also the recipient of three other student nominated awards for the quality of teaching and student support with particular reference to supervision and employability support. Recent papers include research on the impacts of urbanisation on watersheds, the role of green infrastructure on air quality in urban areas and an evaluation of approaches to urban agriculture for sustainable food provision.
Areas of Research
My research focuses on the application of knowledge to real world problems working with a range of organisations drawn from my network of contacts. My current research work involves investigation into soil contamination processes and the implications for sensitive land use, evaluation of perceptions of environmental compliance obligations in high-risk business sectors, pro-environmental behaviour in business and the potential environmental benefits of green infrastructure. I supervise PhD and MSc research students undertaking work on sustainable waste management, pro-environmental behaviours, and environmental pollution.
My teaching encompasses all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate study. My principal area of teaching is environmental pollution including air quality analysis and management, water pollution monitoring and control, and contaminated land assessment and remediation. I also teach extensively on aspects of environmental management for business including environmental impact assessment, business procedures for sustainability (environmental management systems, auditing and sustainability reporting) and risk management.
I have contributed to the development of practice-based and professionally oriented postgraduate courses, which facilitate student-centred approaches to teaching and learning and provide students with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills relevant to employment in the environmental industries. The courses bring together a broad range of graduates from a variety of different backgrounds and offer significant opportunities to work on real client-based projects of relevance to the environmental industries.
