On Tuesday this week Vice Chancellor Nic Beech hosted a special evening at the House of Lords for the It Starts in Salford celebration event. The aim was to explore the social and economic impact that ‘civic’ universities can have, and to showcase the work that Salford is already doing in this space.
Located in the Cholmondeley Room at the Palace of Westminster overlooking the Thames, the University's Chair of Council Lord Keith Bradley and Professor Nic Beech were joined by over one hundred guests from across business, politics, creativity and culture, as well as philanthropic donors, alumni, charities and community organisations.
They had gathered to discuss and share ideas on how the University of Salford is enriching lives already and what more can be done to deliver social and economic impact regionally, nationally and globally.
The University is very proud of the excellent scholarships it offers, and one of the keynote speakers was Aeronautical Engineering student Serena Akudolu Peters who is a Gerry Mason / Morson Scholarship student. She was interviewed on stage by Chancellor Lucy Meacock, who asked her about her experience as a scholarship student at Salford and her ambitions and dreams for the future.
Cat McCusker from PwC was also invited to speak. She singled out Salford as an example of best practice in Higher Education: “The University of Salford is leading the change in fostering innovation, building partnerships and reinforcing its civic mission to drive growth,” she said.
