University of Salford nursing associate named Manchester’s ‘Apprentice of the Year’

Categories: School of Health and Society

A recent graduate of the University of Salford’s Nursing Associate programme has been named ‘Apprentice of the Year’ for his commitment to delivering compassionate care to vulnerable patients.

Winner Ethan McKnight faced strong competition in the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ category, including another University of Salford apprentice, Lyndon Pillar, who was also shortlisted for the award.

However, it was Ethan’s dedication to providing empathetic, person-centred care, especially for patients with dementia, which ultimately won over judges at the Made in Manchester Awards.

On his win, Ethan said: “Apprenticeships are a vital gateway to hands-on learning, offering invaluable experience that shapes both personal and professional growth.

“Winning the Made in Manchester 2025 Apprentice of the Year award is an incredible honour, and it reaffirms my belief that apprenticeships provide the perfect foundation for building a successful, impactful career. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to have learned and grown through this path, and I’m excited to continue pushing boundaries in my profession.”

Nicole Blythe, Programme Lead for the Nursing Associate Apprenticeship at the University of Salford, who nominated Ethan for the award, said: "Ethan is an exceptional rising star in the world of nursing. His compassion and leadership continue to leave a lasting impact on patients, families, and the nursing community.

"Congratulations Ethan! You’ve made us so proud. You’re a fantastic asset to the world of nursing, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll accomplish!"

The Made in Manchester Awards (or MiMAs) celebrate the best of Manchester’s young business talent. The awards recognise excellence in innovation, entrepreneurship, training and development, and leadership across a number of categories.
