Teaching Fellow performs with Sleater-Kinney on Jimmy Kimmel Live
A University of Salford Teaching Fellow performed on one of North America’s biggest late-night talk shows during a tour with the rock band Sleater-Kinney.
Katie Harkin, who teaches on the BA Music Management and Creative Enterprise programme, joined the American band for their performance of the track ‘Say It Like You Mean It’ on Jimmy Kimmel Live on December 13 as part of their tour dates across North America last year.
The musician, whose stage name as a solo artist is Harkin, also played with the band for a session for BBC 6 Music’s Mary Anne Hobbs in the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios last week and over the last few months, played a headline show at the London Roundhouse for Pitchfork Festival as well as appearing at the Corona Capital festival in Mexico City and Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle.
Katie said: “Playing Jimmy Kimmel was as surreal as it gets as the studio is literally in Hollywood. For something that could be very high pressure, it was quite a relaxed atmosphere and we were well taken care of.
“To be able to get back out and play together with the band for the first time since the pandemic was very special. I’ve been touring with them since 2015 so it felt great to get back out on the road.”
Katie played a range of instruments with the band whilst out on tour, such as the keyboard, guitar, percussion and was also a backing vocalist. She joined the University in 2022 after many years as a recording and performing musician and says that she now looks to provide valuable insights from her touring with the students on the programme.
She added: “I’m examining my experience more as I am touring because I want to be able to explain it to students in a way that would be useful to them. I really value being able to spend time in this industry as it gives you insights that are great for both a performance and academic perspective.”
