Talented graduate secures first job in radio at Bauer Media UK
A talented newly-graduated Salford student has landed his first role in the media industry at one of the UK's leading radio and television companies.
BA Television and Radio Production graduate Matt McGettrick has just started work as a Trainee Audio Producer at Bauer Media UK where he will be working as part of a production team to deliver content for the company's leading stations such as Hits Radio, KISS and Absolute Radio.
Matt, who is originally from Bromsgrove, is an aspiring radio professional who was devoted to Shock Radio, one of the University's two student radio stations, during his time here. Starting at the station in his first year, he went on to become Head of Music in the final year of his studies and was involved in five shows at a time.
He secured the job earlier this summer and is now very excited about getting stuck into the industry that he's been passionate about from a young age.
Matt said: "It was quite surreal to get started here at Bauer. I was feeling a bit lost at the time as I didn't get a job that I really wanted but it's often when you're feeling the most lost that the perfect opportunity seems to come around!
"I'm really enjoying it and it's got me in a great position where I can take my first few steps in the industry. It's been a lot to take in but each day has been exciting.
Matt credits his experience at Shock and the skills he's picked up from the course for helping him land the role.
He said: "My time at Shock made me realise just how much I love producing. It also taught me so many skills that I feel I wouldn't have had so much of a headstart as I do now when it comes to working in the industry.
"I have so much more knowledge about radio now then I did when I started and it was also a really good learning and social experience.
"When it comes to the course, it also massively supported me for this kind of role. All of the lecturers I had shared their industry experience, everything I was taught is transferable to the industry and the equipment I had access to is of a really high standard.
"It sets you up really well so it's not that huge a jump once you start to apply for these jobs."
On his advice for students who have either recently graduated or graduating in the future and are looking at jobs in radio, he said: "The more people you email, the more jobs you apply for, the higher the chances of you getting in. You've got to sell yourself and be confident. This course teaches you everything you need to get into the industry, it's all yours for the taking.
"As long as you put the work in, the right opportunities will come."
