Student launches new affordable music video production company

Categories: Salford Business School

A master’s student from the University of Salford has launched a company that focuses on the production of affordable yet high-quality music videos.

Country singer and Wildlife Documentary Production master’s student, Melanie Greggain, is currently developing PoppyLab Productions, a company that offers music video services to artists.

Their services are open to unsigned artists, specialist performers and record labels, with production packages available for a variety of budgets.

Melanie, from Cumbria, said: “I’m a musician myself and I saw a gap in the market. I know how expensive it can be to get a good quality video out there, so I wanted to make something that was affordable for artists.

“Especially now, during the last year, everyone is reliant on online content. Nobody has been able to go out and do a gig, so this is quite a good time to be launching.”

The idea for the business began when Melanie felt there was not a lot of production companies that specialised in solely music videos for artists.

“These videos are made by artists for artists,” she said. “I think that’s quite important as I understand what it takes to make a good video, what goes into it, how to storyboard.

“They are art in itself and they tell the story of the song.”

Melanie worked with Launch@Salford, the university’s business incubator, to develop her business. Launch was set up in 2018 with the idea of aiding students and alumni in developing their own business. As part of a six-month support programme, users get access to a plethora of support from the team, including training, guidance, office space and financial aid.

Justyna Turner, Incubation Manager at Launch, said: “Melanie has the experience and background necessary to make this business a success. She’s hardworking, dedicated and willing to give her time to clients to ensure they have the best experience in her care.

“I have no doubts things will go well for her and PoppyLab Productions!”
