Kier are main contractors on the University’s £54 million health and wellbeing building on the A6 near to Salford Crescent station.

The state-of-the-art project has been designed by AHR architects. It will be fully-electric and low-carbon and will be targeting BREEAM Excellent plus WELL Gold standards. It will house some of the University’s most popular health and wellbeing courses and clinics as well as an attractive roof garden and extensive outdoor spaces for students, colleagues and the public to enjoy.

Completion is scheduled for October 2026, when it will feature clinical-grade facilities so that students can learn and practice in spaces that will look identical to NHS type settings.

Interim Dean of the School of Health and Society Vicky Halliwell said: “Today is a big moment for us, as we stage a ‘spades in the ground ceremony’ for our new building which will be really prominent on the A6. It will be a very visible reminder that the University is here not only to educate future health and wellbeing professionals – but also to help enrich the lives of the people of Salford who will be invited in to access health and wellness services and clinics run by our partners.”

Paul Dennett, Salford City Mayor, commented: “I welcome this news and it is really pleasing to see more investment, opportunity and innovation being realised for students and residents. This promises to be yet another impressive addition to the city’s skyline and a further example of a commitment to low-carbon construction right here in Salford. It’s great that this new building will also complement the wider Crescent Salford masterplan that we’re delivering in partnership with the University and ECF. ”

Rebecca Long Bailey, MP for Salford said “This building is going to be iconic. The architecture is going to be something we’ve never seen before in Salford, it will be an eco friendly building that harnesses the power of nature and creates a space of wellbeing for staff and students. But what’s also important is its connection to the community; it will be about making sure the university of Salford is for the people of Salford.”

Sarah Morton, regional director of Kier Construction North & Scotland, said: "We are looking forward to working with the University of Salford on this significant project. With our extensive experience in the education, healthcare, and science and technology sectors, we are eager to leverage our expertise to create a cutting-edge facility that will serve the needs of students, staff and the wider community for many years to come."

The site is a key part of the University’s multi-million pound Campus Connectivity Plan, which is the major redevelopment of its research, teaching and public spaces and is the most ambitious development of its estate to date. The new building will also complement the wider Crescent Salford masterplan delivered by Salford City Council in partnership with the University and ECF.

The building is part of the School of Health and Society, which is the largest School in the University with over 8400 students.
