Salford wins in all shortlisted categories at the 2024 BJTC Awards
University of Salford students brought home three awards for the second year in a row at the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) Awards last night at Sky’s headquarters.
The annual event celebrates the very best work of Broadcast Journalism from students across the country.
Salford won in each of the three categories it was shortlisted in, picking up awards for Best Radio News Report, Best Radio News Feature and Best Podcast.
The three wins on the night tied Salford with City University, London and the University is now an award-winner in three out of the last four years.
Salford’s winners were the following:
- Best Radio News Report – George Icke. BA Journalism: Broadcast graduate George, who now works for national radio brand Global, won for his piece ‘Rural Crime: The East Midlands Fights Back’ which is an investigation into the rise in organised rural crime within the East Midlands.
- Best Radio News Feature – Hannah Veness. Fellow BA Journalism: Broadcast graduate Hannah won for her feature ‘Priceless: The Baby Trade 40 Years On’ which traces her journey as a surrogate child and hears from others whose lives have been changed by surrogacy. Hannah now works as a freelance reporter and bulletin reader for Greatest Hits Radio. Fellow graduate Eleanor Hayns was also the runner-up in this category for her piece ‘Finding Your Spectrum’ which reflects on her experience of autism and talks to others with a late autism diagnosis. Eleanor now works as a Junior Account Executive at PR firm Little Red Rooster.
- Best Podcast – Megan Folan, Ellen Watt, Emma Nelson and Luke Pons. Four BA Journalism: Broadcast students secured the win for the series which investigated what goes on behind closed doors in Manchester after midnight.
Andrew Fletcher, Programme Leader for BA Journalism: Broadcast, said: “It was a fantastic night for Salford journalism at the BJTC awards and we are so proud of our students who have once again taken home awards in three of the 12 categories.
“Students on our BJTC-accredited BA Journalism courses continue to produce outstanding journalism and it’s great to see their work recognised by industry leaders.”
