Salford Nurses Celebrated on International Nurses Day
International Nurses' Day is marked around the world each year on 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth.
The University of Salford is marking the day with a special thank you to acknowledge the incredible work of our nursing staff.
Professor Margaret Rowe, Dean of the School of Health and Society at the university, said: “Congratulations to all nursing colleagues, students and our nursing associates on International Nurses Day 2021.
“Last year was a celebration of 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale and the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Due to the pandemic many of our celebrations and events were unable to go ahead as we had planned, although we did do some virtual events; an example being having the fabulous Dame Donna Kinnair talking our students and staff. Instead of conferences and events we showed our profession off to the full by dealing with the coronavirus outbreak.
“Nurses and students across the globe rose to the challenge of dealing with the pandemic sharing compassion, competence and skill to care for patients and their families in many different situations. Nurses demonstrated their resilience and ability to meet the countless challenges that the pandemic gave us. This past year has been an incredibly difficult time for all and for many it will take a while to recover, but with support from colleagues, friends and family I am hopeful that we will make good progress.
“In this past year it has been amazing to see so many of our nursing students working in the NHS; some as deployed aspirant nurses, others embracing their student placement and all going above and beyond anything we could have imagined.
“A huge thank you to all the nursing and nursing associate students for the past year. A huge thank you also to all of our nursing colleagues. You may recall the training we developed for the Nightingale North West and colleagues at pace developing and educating a workforce to deal with the pandemic in Greater Manchester, whilst carrying on educating our nursing students so they were prepared to work in the NHS.
“On this International day for nurses we are fortunate to have such great placement partners who have been at the forefront of this incredibly difficult year and have done a sterling job in protecting the population and caring for people who are ill. We are truly grateful.
“Lets celebrate this International Nurses Day with a big thank you for all the nurses globally who have made such a difference to peoples lives”.
