Salford named as third best place to study politics in national guide
The University of Salford has been named as one of the top three universities in the country to study politics in The Guardian's 2025 University Guide.
Our Politics programmes, which consist of the BA International Relations and Politics & BA Contemporary History and Politics courses, are third in this year’s guide, just below The University of Oxford and The University of Cambridge.
The programmes were given an 85.8 score out of 100 by the guide which also positioned Salford as the best place to study a Politics programme in the North of England. It is a jump of 17 places from the 20th place it was given in 2023.
Dr Richard Jones, Director of Journalism, Politics and Contemporary History at The University of Salford, said: “This is a great result and is reward for years of hard work by students and our excellent staff team.
“Having our Politics courses ranked as the best in the UK outside Oxford and Cambridge speaks for itself.
“This follows a strong result for us in the last Research Excellence Framework. The quality of our staff research in Politics and Contemporary History clearly shines through in the courses and modules that students take at Salford.”
Alongside Politics, the University also scored highly in other creative disciplines with the Creative Writing programme placed 10th (a rise of seven places from 2024) and our programmes across Journalism, Interior Design and Fashion (which includes Fashion Design, Fashion Image Making and Styling & Fashion Business and Promotion) finished 13th, 16th and 16th respectively in the subject league tables.
It is the second successive year of strong results for the University in The Guardian’s annual University Guide after three programmes were named in the top 15 of their respective subject league tables in 2023.
The University was placed 83rd out of 122 universities in the overall guide, a rise of five places from 2023.
The Daily Mail League tables were also published recently with Salford climbing 11 places from from 69th to 58th out of 129 providers. These rankings, which are only in their second year, ranked our Journalism programmes as the seventh best in the country and our Art programmes as the eighth best.
