Salford graduate in running for national student television award

Categories: School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology

A Salford graduate's television show that she made at university is in the running to win a national student award.

Lulu's Zoo, a CBeebies-style television show, starring and produced by recent Salford graduate Sarah Baker, is in the running for the Undergraduate Entertainment, Comedy and Drama Award at the Royal Television Society's Student Television Awards on Friday 21 June.

Sarah's film won the Best Entertainment & Comedy Award at the society's North West Awards on a very successful night in March when our students won eight of 13 available awards on the night.

Lulu's Zoo is set at both Chester Zoo and the University's MediaCity campus' television studios, as zookeeper Lulu teaches young children all about the wonders of wildlife. The 14 minute programme introduces key members of the animal kingdom to children in the form of songs and story segments and was funded by a GoFundMe page.

Sarah said: "I can't believe that Lulu's Zoo has made it to the national RTS awards! It was an unforgettable experience producing this show and I had so much fun making it. It was so lovely seeing the show come together.

"I am so honoured to have won the regional RTS award and can't believe I'll now be going to the national awards. I couldn't be prouder of myself and the team."

The RTS Student Television Awards are designed to highlight the talent, potential and enthusiasm of students across the UK, celebrating the exemplary audiovisual work they create. The awards are highly coveted by universities and a nomination is a significant achievement for any student.

The university had great success in the awards in 2023 with BA Broadcast Journalism alumnus Marcus Smith winning the Undergraduate Journalism Award for his Tales for the Dales series whilst four Film Production graduates were nominated in the Undergraduate Entertainment and Comedy, Drama category for Double Yellows.
