Salford apprentice wins Women in Construction award

Categories: School of Science, Engineering and Environment

A University of Salford apprentice has won a major award for her impressive work within the construction industry.

Georgia Veevers took home a well-deserved ‘Ones to Watch’ award at the Women In Construction awards at a ceremony in London last week. She is completing a BSc in Construction Project Management and a Construction Site Management Level 6 apprenticeship at Salford, alongside an apprenticeship at office design company Overbury.

Georgia is one of several female apprentices who are making waves in the construction industry. Originally, growing up she didn’t know what she wanted to be, however a conversation with a good friend who works in construction sparked an interest that made her realise there was more to construction than just building. From then on, her academic journey took her through the university and into Overbury, an interior fitting contractor based in Manchester.

While there, she has had the fantastic opportunity of project managing a two-week charity project that the company completed for Stockport Race and Equality Partnership, in which she completely refurbished their community centre using volunteers from subcontractors and Overbury. The project was nominated for the Best Community Project 2023 award at the BPIC Awards 2023.

Georgia said: “I was over the moon to win! The nomination itself was already an achievement, so the win was even more of a shock

“I hope it’s inspirational. I want other women to know they can do it, and can be just as good as anyone else in the industry. A lot of girls don’t know how much is on offer within the construction industry, there are so many different roles, and I hope this is able to spark at least one woman’s interest in the field.

“My main goal now is to keep learning, keep taking every opportunity and work towards my Project Manager degree qualification.”

Nicky Harris, BSc Construction Project Management Programme Leader at the University of Salford said: “This is very well-deserved success for Georgia. She works so hard and is incredibly talented and dedicated. She is a real trailblazer and will doubtless go on to have a successful carerr. Her achievements show that women who are interested in working in the construction industry have more opportunities than ever before. Degree Apprenticeships allow you to earn while you learn and get a real foot in the door and are a great way of getting into the industry.”
