Salford academic joins #CREDtalk podcast

Categories: Research, School of Health and Society

An academic from the University of Salford has taken centre stage for a recent #CREDtalk – an initiative developed by England’s Chief Nurse for Adult Social Care, Professor Deborah Sturdy, who has made promoting research her top priority.

#CREDtalks (Care, Research, Education and Debate) are a series of podcasts and webinars which provide a platform for people working in social care to access research findings with direct relevance to their everyday work, as well as encouraging people to learn how to get involved in research.

Dr Melanie Stephens, Associate Professor in Adult Nursing, joined four care home managers to discuss the benefits of multi-disciplinary working social care settings.

The talk, titled ‘The Value of an Interprofessional Placement Model in Social Care’ explored the impact of interprofessional student training placements in care home settings, a three-year project Melanie has been leading across Greater Manchester.

The webinar also included an examination of the development and delivery of an IPE (Interprofessional Education) placement model and the effect on student and care home staff knowledge, skills, personal development and resident outcomes.

The findings were shared with 82 attendees from across the United Kingdom, including those who work in the NHS, local authorities, private and voluntary sector and higher education institutions.

Melanie and the managers explored the longer-term impacts of IPE in care homes and how such initiatives address recent social care policy.

Melanie explained: “Research is key to shaping and improving nursing practice and the care and support that underpins living, ageing and dying well in social care settings. It is fantastic to be able to share our research directly with those working in social care settings, and we hope to encourage and inspire more people to consider becoming involved in future research projects like ours.”

The #CREDtalk was recorded and is available to watch here.
