Rugby partnership renewed

Categories: Salford Business School

With the new Betfred Super League season about to get underway, the University of Salford and Salford Red Devils Rugby League Club have teamed up as part of a three-year agreement covering sport and education.

The renewed partnership will enable Salford Red Devils to tap into academic skills in areas such as sports business and management, media and journalism, sports science and physiotherapy support, while offering a range of opportunities to the University's students and staff in return.

Dean of the University of Salford Business School, Janice Allan, said: “As a business school, we are committed to supporting industries in our region and the partnership benefits students from all disciplines.

“Our physiotherapy students are gaining valuable real-world experience working with the players and coaches; our creative students are assisting with pre-season media launch events and designing kit; and our events students are organising take-over events.

“This partnership represents our industry collaboration strategy at work. Most importantly, our ongoing engagement with industry partners helps us ensure that our students are as well-positioned as possible to gain employment across different sport and exercise professions.”

The partnership has been renewed for a three-year period and the University continues as a sponsor for the Red Devils for the 2021 season.

The University is also sponsoring Australian Red Devils player Pauli Pauli. He said: "I'm really happy and grateful to be sponsored by the University of Salford for 2021. We've had a great relationship with the uni over recent years, with past and present students working at the club.

"I can't wait for the new season to start and hopefully win some silverware with Salford this year!"

Through this partnership, the Red Devils continue to benefit from gaining access to facilities such as the human performance laboratory for pre-season testing and the Media City Campus located in Salford Quays.

University of Salford students, meanwhile, are able to tap into a host of opportunities devised to enrich their education, whether that be on placements, through dissertation projects or even as part of staff-led projects. Trainee journalists have been among the first to reap the rewards of the partnership, putting their lecture theatre learning through its paces with a visit to the Club’s training ground and access to competitive matches.

Salford Red Devils managing director Paul King said: “As quite a close-knit, community-focused club, we want to promote the values and positive contribution of the game of rugby league and to instil pride and enrich the lives of our community.

“As a club, Salford Red Devils place great importance on being open and inclusive and work hard to create many platforms to engage with local people. It is hoped that even more of these opportunities will open up as the partnership with the University of Salford develops.”
