Creative Writing student's pandemic story published in esteemed magazine

Categories: School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology

Creative Writing student Charlie Hinkley will be published by one of Britain's most established literary magazines. His story about student life in the pandemic, 'Balancing Act', has been accepted for The London Magazine's new voices edition.

Charlie wrote the story for his Level 4 module assessment and worked with tutor David Savill to produce a polished draft for submission. "As soon as I read Charlie's module submission, I knew it was saying something urgent and vital about life for students in the pandemic." David says. "Charlie's ability to capture the out-of-body experience of this past year really shows his talent."

"Balancing Act is about moving to a city where nothing’s open, completing a course almost entirely online, and struggling to make friends while confined to a dinky bedroom and flat. Over the course of writing it, I realised this was not a unique, individual experience, but a collective one. There are thousands of students who will have all had a hard time during this ‘unprecedented’ year, and so I wanted to write this story to capture not just my feelings, but hopefully create something that other people my age could relate to as well."

"On our creative writing course, I want every student to feel a submission is a shot at publication," David says. "It's our job to match students to the publication opportunities out there. To land a story with London Magazine tells you that you're one of the very best of your generation."
