Appointment of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost

The University of Salford is delighted to announce that Professor Simone Buitendijk has joined the University as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost.

Professor Simone Buitendijk

Professor Buitendijk brings with her an outstanding academic background. She recently led the University of Leeds as Vice-Chancellor, and prior to that role served four years as Vice-Provost (Education) at Imperial College London and five years as Vice-Rector (Education) at Leiden University in the Netherlands. She has held a Chair in Maternal and Child Health at both Imperial College and Leiden University and a Chair in Midwifery Studies at the University of Amsterdam Medical Centre. She presently holds an extraordinary Chair at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria. Simone will also hold a Chair as Professor of Maternal and Newborn Health in the School of Health and Society at the University of Salford.



Simone has led large scale change programmes aimed at delivering education that is interactive and student-centred, and at fostering a non-competitive, cross-institutional and inclusive research culture. She has encouraged compassionate leadership and has championed Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) with a specific emphasis on supporting women leaders and leaders from minoritised backgrounds within academia.



Simone's expertise and leadership will contribute significantly to the University's ongoing strategic initiatives to enrich lives through furthering prosperity, healthy living, sustainability, creativity and innovation.
