About Salford Open Journals

Salford Open Journals is supported by the Library, and offers fully Open Access Journal publishing for our community of students, academics and staff.

We're seeking new journal titles!

Publishing in student-led journals helps improve writing and research skills, enhances employability, and provides valuable experience in academic publishing. It also allows students to contribute to scholarly discussions and build professional confidence.

Currently, Salford Open Journals hosts two titles: Bioscientist and Grit, and is actively seeking proposals for new journals. Interested students or staff can submit proposals for new titles, with the expectation of publishing at least one issue per year.

Submissions are due by November 29th, with reviews beginning in December. Full support is provided throughout the process. Contact us at salfordopenjournals@salford.ac.uk or consult our guidance page for additional support.

Benefits of student publishing

Student journals offer a valuable early experience of academic publishing. By publishing their work in a journal, students are provided with an opportunity to develop their writing and research skills, and their future career opportunities are supported.

Students are given an insight into open access publishing and the workflows involved in managing a journal. This includes the peer review process, the use of DOIs and creative commons licences.

Our publications

We currently have two publications:

  • Bioscientist - The Salford Biomedicine Society Magazine
  • Grit - The Journal of the Northern School of Writing at Salford
