Checkpoint 8
The Chemistry Tower in winter
The photo shows the 12-storey Chemistry Tower looming large between the Peel Building and the Salford Museum and Art Gallery.
Some facts relating to the photo
The Chemistry Tower, built in 1966, was so close to the Peel Building — about 10 metres' separation — that its fire certificate was granted on the understanding that Peel Building was to be demolished! The Tower had a Paternoster lift - a continuously moving, open elevator system with a chain of compartments that passengers can step into and out of without the lift stopping. The lift compartments would always remain upright, but older students would sometimes play tricks on new students by arriving at a floor upside-down, complaining of having been tipped over when the lift got to the top! The building was pulled down in the 1990s.
