Some facts relating to the photo
ln the foreground is the Cockcroft Building. When it was built in the 1960s, Cockcroft was known as the Nuclear Building. It was built to hold the Nuclear Science Department. The building was renamed Cockcroft in 1970 after Sir John Douglas Cockcroft (1897-1967), a British physicist, educated at the University of Manchester. Cockcroft was a joint winner of the 1951 Nobel Peace Prize for Physics for pioneering the use of particle accelerators in studying the atomic nucleus.
