Checkpoint 2
Clifford Whitworth Building
The photo was taken in 1971 and shows a newly built Library building.
Some facts relating to the photo
Before this building, which went on to be named the Clifford Whitworth Library, was built, the library was housed in the Maxwell Building. Extensions, in the form of an entrance and the Lady Hale Building, have since been made to the left and right of the original building. The grassy area is now paved and New Adelphi fills much of the surrounding area.
The building was opened by HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1971, and, in 1984, was re-named in honour of the University’s first Vice Chancellor, Dr Clifford Whitworth (1967-1974). Born in Rochdale, Dr Whitworth oversaw the transformation of what was the Royal College of Advanced Technology into the University of Salford in 1967. He is quoted as saying that ‘no university can be better than its library’! In 1988, the Library building was extended to provide more study space and books.
