Checkpoint 11
Maxwell Building foundations
Work began on the Maxwell Building in 1958 to provide accommodation for the newly created Royal College of Advanced Technology.
Some facts relating to the photo
Maxwell Building was originally part of a campus plan which would have seen the Salford Museum and Art Gallery and Peel Building (both visible in the photo above) demolished to make way for modernist 1960s architecture. Thank goodness that sense was seen in time to save these two terrific old buildings!
The Maxwell buildings were named after James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), a Scottish physicist who formulated electromagnetic theory. He had no known connection with Salford!
