Mac's experiences of the International Foundation Year and a BA (Hons) Degree
Mckinley “Mac” Howard arrived in Salford from Louisiana, USA to initially study our International Foundation Year. After successfully passing, she is now in her first year of BA Film, TV and Stage Design.
With ambitions to pursue a career in the film industry, take a read of Mac’s Salford story so far.
Journey to Salford
“After deciding I wanted to study in the UK, I knew I wanted to be around Manchester because I had friends living in the area which would make adapting to life in a new country not quite as overwhelming.
I chose the University of Salford specifically because one of my friends attended the university a few years ago and spoke highly of his experience. In particular, the robust mental health support from askUS which is standard for every student.
Whilst it has been an adjustment moving to Salford from Louisiana, particularly in terms of the weather, the people I have met have been incredible. My fellow students and the Students’ Union have been incredible in not only celebrating my traditions but sharing them with other students. For example, I was able to organise an event to celebrate Mardi Gras with help from the Students’ Union, one of the most important festivals in Louisiana. Doing things like this has helped me to feel closer to home”
My course at Salford
“I joined Salford on the Art, Design and Media International Foundation Year, before moving on to my undergraduate programme in Film, TV and Stage Design.
My course is practically focused with project-based assessments, ranging from showing off our CAD skills to create visuals all the way through to building physical props and white card models.
Our lecturers are very supportive! They are always encouraging us to question things and experiment within our modules. The programme team have experience across multiple fields including theatre design, drama set building and technical drafting.
The course content has been created by industry professionals and is therefore geared towards helping us prepare for our future careers. Our lecturers ensure we are comfortable and skilled in industry-standard software and technology.
I plan to carry out a placement during the third year of my course to gain additional sector experience.”

Away from the classroom
“The support for international students is amazing – I never feel like I am figuring things out alone. I had support registering with the NHS and navigating the different services offered by Salford. Any time I have had some stresses related to my course the Student Progression Administrators (SPA) team have been incredibly supportive.
My favourite non-academic experience so far has been picnicking in Peel Park during our summer break. I’d never seen a park so active and alive with people enjoying the space. My friends and I really enjoyed being able to interact with other people enjoying the park as well.
Living in Salford gives me the perfect mix of city and nature. I enjoy being able to walk in and around Manchester city centre. But if there are days where I want some peace away from the city, there are lots of lovely natural areas to walk around close by.”
Looking ahead
“My aim is to tell stories that inspire others and their creative pursuits. Back in Louisiana, I taught children martial arts which has inspired me to want to work with children again in the future. I’d like to have a job that involves teaching or entertaining children.
I’d like to focus on drama film production, potential in the areas of concept art or prop design or set dressing.”
