Following a passion for data: Ahsan's story
Ahsan from Bangladesh always had a passion for data and decided to turn this into a career by studying our master’s in data science.
Discover how Salford quickly felt like home to him.
From statistics to data science
"I completed my undergraduate degree in statistics which gave me an enthusiasm for the world of data. In my opinion, the field of data science is going to dominate business decisions with more organisations looking to recruit data scientists therefore I knew it was a good career path to follow.
I wanted to attend a university near Manchester so I spent some time researching all the universities based here. It became clear that MSc Data Science at Salford was very advanced and practical which would give me a great start in the industry. I also spoke to my cousin who attends another UK institution, and she said that the University of Salford’s School of Science, Engineering and Environment is one of the best, so she also encouraged me to choose Salford."
MSc Data Science at Salford
"The course goes through the foundations of data science. The modules not only provide theoretical knowledge but also practical implementation to understand the core of the subject and how it works in real-life scenarios.
During the first two trimesters of the course, I worked hard to achieve strong grades to have a chance of completing an industry collaboration project. I applied for a project collaborating with Eden Smith Group Ltd, an organisation specialising in data and sustainability recruitment, consulting and education. I was interviewed by the Head of Analytics who was impressed with my motivation for the project and knowledge of the field.
I am currently halfway through the project and adding value to the company through my work. The project is compiling all the knowledge I have learnt so far in my course. It has boosted my knowledge and sharpened my soft skills which I believe will lead to a fruitful career in the near future."
Outside of the classroom
"This was my first time studying abroad and I was nervous before I arrived because I didn’t know what to expect. I found my first day in Salford and Manchester so exciting, I just kept thinking about how vibrant the city was.
I’ve joined the University’s cricket club and through this and my course, I’ve made lots of friends. I spent a lot of time in my first few weeks walking around Salford and it very quickly felt like I wasn’t too far away from home.
Wherever I travel after Salford, this city will always be very close to my heart."
My advice
"If you want to make a career transition to data science, I would say just go for it. I truly believe you won’t be disappointed. I have friends from other backgrounds on the course and they say that choosing this master’s was the best decision of their life."
