Creative courses: portfolio help

As part of your application for one of our creative courses, you will be asked to submit a portfolio of your work that demonstrates your skills, whilst giving you the opportunity to showcase your passion and creativity.

When we use the term 'portfolio', we aren't just looking for finished pieces of work, we are happy to see examples of all of your work, as this can give us an understanding of your thought processes and ideas development. 

To help you understand more about what we're looking for from your portfolio, we have put together some course specific guidance, along with some FAQs.

Top tips

Give yourself lots of time to prepare your portfolio as we want it to be a true reflection of your talent.

We are looking for applicants to be passionate and knowledgeable about their subject area so make sure this is demonstrated in your work.

MA Animation

What should I prepare?

Prepare a digital portfolio and showreel of your work which demonstrates a strong understanding of the visual, technical, and sequential skills needed to develop content for animation production. 

The showreel should focus on your final piece and the accompanying portfolio should demonstrate the process of how you have developed your final piece. 

You could present a range of work in your portfolio including:

  • Sketches
  • Design development work 
  • Photos of inspiration references 
  • Concept ideas 
  • Behind the scenes images of your process
  • Any other creative work that demonstrates your skills in art, design and digital media

MA Creative Technology

What should I prepare?

We'd like to see a portfolio of your work and experience within the creative fields.

You could present a range of work including - 

  • Stills/visuals or examples of creative technology-based work produced
  • Moving imagery/GIF or animation-based works 
  • Examples of creative-technology work such as VR, blender or motion graphics

Submitting your portfolio

Submit your portfolio as pdf.

If you work is based online only please include links to the relevant websites for us to view.

For any video-based works, you can either share a link within the pdf or show a series of stills to allow us to get a sense of the imagery.

MA Creative Writing: Innovation and Experiment

What should I prepare?

Please upload a 3 page A4 portfolio which could include the following:

  • A selection of short examples of a range of your creative work
  • An extra from a longer creative project AND other relevant non-fiction writing which could include travel features, autobiography or academic writing.

MA Contemporary Fine Art

What should I prepare?

We'd like to see a range of relevant visual materials/projects completed within the last 4 years. These could include:

  • Studio practice
  • Site-specific 
  • Public realm based artwork

MA Dance: Choreography

What should I prepare?

You should prepare 3-5 minutes of footage or links to relevant examples of working practice and/or the dancer moving. 

You should also include a self-type introduction to yourself, an insight into the work that will be viewed including the theme or focus of the practice or commentary about the context of the work and explain your role in the featured clips (e.g. dancer, choreographer, teacher).

You could present a variety of footage including:

  • A showreel with examples of multiple aspects of your work
  • Technique class footage - all dance training styles are accepted 
  • Teaching footage either with a group of students or an example of you teaching practice to camera
  • Solo or group choreography 
  • Digital performance work

MA Dance: Creative Dance Education

What should I prepare?

You should prepare 3-5 minutes of footage or links to relevant examples of working practice and/or the dancer moving.

MA Digital Video Production and Marketing

What should I prepare?

You should prepare a portfolio of work that includes your previous video work. 

In addition, you should record yourself answering the following questions:

  • Please share a specific advertising campaign you've been inspired by and explain why you felt that it was effective.
  • What marketing skills do you expect to gain during the course and how will you apply them to your creative video work?
  • If you could find your ideal job today, what would it look like?

MA Dance: Performance and Professional Practices

What should I prepare?

You should prepare a 3-5 minute showreel recording that showcases your dance technique. 

It does not need to be professionally filmed or edited.

MA Editing for TV, Film and Digital Media

What should I prepare?

You should prepare a showreel and a portfolio of work. 

Ideally your portfolio should consist of any video editing examples.

If you don't have any editing experience then examples of any creative work such as any form of filmmaking, photography, graphic design or drawing etc should be included.

If you don't have any examples, we recommend you edit a short video (2-4 minutes long) with footage shot on a smartphone or downloaded from the internet. 

Submitting your work

Please make sure that you upload your showreel in QuickTime format.

MA Fashion Design

What should I prepare?

Prepare a digital portfolio of design work, up to approx 30 pages and no less than 28 pages.

You can present a range of work including:

  • Sketches
  • Design development work
  • Moodboards
  • Concept ideas
  • Illustrations
  • Technical drawings
  • Photos of finished garments
  • Any other creative work that demonstrates your skills in art, design and digital media 

Ensure one project is complete demonstrating your whole design process from initial concept to photographs of the garments made.

Our advice

Present your work in project order, ideally with the most recent first.

Be selective with your portfolio so you showcase your very best work.

Submitting your portfolio

Submit your portfolio as a pdf attachment, which is no more than 25mb (make sure the resolution of all pages is at least 72dpi)

Ensure that your portfolio is well scanned and presented.

MA Film Production

What should I prepare?

You should prepare a portfolio of work. For each element which you include, please highlight your role in the project. 

You could include a mix of work including:

  • Filmmaking 
  • Art 
  • Photography
  • Any other creative material that you feel is relevant to your film work

MSc Games and Extended Reality

What should I prepare?

You should prepare a portfolio work that demonstrates your previous experiences and skills.

You could include stills and images showcasing examples of work in relevant areas including:

  • Game art
  • Coding
  • UX
  • Immersive experiences 
  • Virtual or augmented reality projects

You could also include links to any personal or commercial projects. 

If you don't have direct experience, you could provide examples of creative projects that are not directly related to games or extended reality but which demonstrate your potential to engage with these technologies.

MA Music: Performance

What should I prepare?

You should prepare a video portfolio of work showing examples of you performing suitable music pieces. 

The choice of genre/style of music is up to you but you should choose the style which showcases your performance skills at their strongest.

The quality of the audio is of lesser importance - a video from a phone would be suitable.

MA Music: Composition

What should I prepare?

We would like to see examples of your composition work. 

You should upload audio recordings, examples of composing to picture.

If your training is in western notation, please also submit scores and lead sheets. 

You may also submit other forms of notations as appropriate to your style and training.

MA Music: Interactive Music and Advanced Studio Production

What should I prepare?

You should prepare a portfolio of samples of ensemble recordings either overdub or live and studio composition work.

Please only submit release quality audio recordings.

To accompany your portfolio, you should also submit a technical CV which details the music software packages used, training received and works produced.

MA Public Relations and Digital Communications

What should I prepare?

You should submit a video recording of yourself answering the following questions:

  • Why do you want to work in PR and digital communications?
  • Do you have any relevant work experience in PR and/or digital communications?
  • What is your biggest achievement?
  • Are there any challenges that you have had to overcome?
  • What skills will you bring to this course?
  • Are there any PR campaigns that you admire?
  • Why do you want to study at the University of Salford?
  • Where would you like to work in the future?

MA Socially Engaged Arts Practice

What should I prepare?

You should prepare a portfolio which documents any relevant visual materials/projects completed in the last 4 years.

If possible, you should include testimonies from community or project partners.

MA Socially Engaged Photography

What should I prepare?

You should prepare a portfolio which documents any relevant visual materials/projects completed in the last 4 years.

If possible, you should include testimonies from community or project partners.

MA Visual Communications

What should I prepare?

Prepare a digital portfolio of design work, up to approx 30 pages and no less than 28 pages. 

You can present a range of work including: 

  • Sketches
  • Mind maps 
  • Case studies 
  • Visual research
  • Design development work 
  • Finished designs
  • Motion graphics
  • Videos 
  • Physical work 
  • Overall evaluations

Your portfolio should BE the work, we're looking for a portfolio which is clearly laid out using visual communications design. It should demonstrate a range of approaches to evidence the student's interests and insight into the world.

Our advice

DO design your document - include headers, titles and dividers to separate sections of your practical submission 

DO walk us through your approach to visual communications and how you might approach this course 

DO edit your portfolio to include your best pieces of work 

DO explain your work and approach, don't assume that everyone knows your work

Submit your portfolio as a pdf attachment. Your file should be no larger than 10Mb. Images should be 72dpi.

MA Wildlife Documentary Production

What should I prepare?

We'd like to see your passion and experience with animals/conservation and film production/photography.

You can present a range of work including: 

  • Examples of your work - this could include films, video, photography, writing 
  • Critiques of films you have watched 
  • Ideas for films
