Arin talks about studying Counselling and Psychotherapy at Salford as a US student
Arin Krausz, a BSc Counselling and Psychotherapy: Professional Practice student at the University of Salford, defines his experience of studying at Salford as the most rewarding one.
Read on to explore his journey.
About the course
"BSc Counselling and Psychotherapy: Professional Practice, is a combination of larger lectures and smaller group sessions. We learn about theory and research in the larger lectures and practice therapy skills on each other in the group sessions. We also have personal development workshops where we improve our interpersonal skills. I’m privileged to be mentored by great tutors who are authentic, considerate and caring. They all use their skills as therapists when working with us. I always feel very supported by my tutors, and I believe they genuinely care.
Another brilliant thing about the course is the community. Talking with everyone about our feelings means you really get to know other students on the course. This also creates a sense of connectivity and closeness. An activity that really fostered a sense of togetherness was when we had to draw an outline of our hand and have everyone write something positive about us on the hands. I will definitely keep the messages I was given by course mates for a long, long time!
I feel I have grown immensely throughout the course, both personally and professionally. The short placement as a trainee therapist has given me an opportunity to work closely with a client group. As a part of the placement, I was working with teenagers in college. This engagement has been a really meaningful experience for me."

Outside of the classroom
"There is so much beauty around in Salford. There is a wonderful community garden in Buile Hill park where I volunteer. When the raspberries there are ripe, I make homemade jam. It’s just gorgeous there in the summer.
I have a good social community here which has helped me in settling in the country. There are lots of LGBTQ+ events in Salford and Manchester. I would specifically like to call out Sparkle Sanctuary and Queer Family Tea. They organise monthly gatherings, offering a positive and holistic environment. While attending these events, I have been able to make really nice friends around the city. It’s great to feel accepted by the queer community here, and that has made a world of difference.
I have adopted lots of UK traditions, but my favourite has to be the food. I love a good Sunday roast. I’m still a university student and can’t go out for one every Sunday so instead I sometimes buy a cheap cut of meat and marinate it to make a roast at home. I’m still learning how to make Yorkshire puddings though!"
Advice to other international students
"I would highly recommend connecting with people and events before you arrive. Instagram is one of the best and most convenient ways to do this. I would also suggest connecting with people to build a community. There are tons of free art and culture events around the city, and they are a great way to make friends too.
Also, get the student Bee Network bus pass. It is absolutely invaluable for getting around town, and students get a massively subsidised rate. You can also get a railcard if you want to travel."
Future in the UK
"I plan to get my long-term visa and settle down here as a counsellor at a school or college. I also aim to turn me and my friends’ 350-page Blades in the Dark play-by-post game into an actual bound book. And finally, I would love to make Mexican menudo and bring its glory to the people of Salford!"
