My experiences at Salford
“I moved from Anamaduwa, Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom for my master’s, after studying literature in my home country.
Shifting to a new place wasn’t much of a challenge for me since I was so excited about the course.
My course was very interesting and had a collection of unique practical modules. Our curriculum was not just limited to classroom teaching and seminars but there was access to archive information to gain different perspectives.
I also had a field trip to International Anthony Burgess Foundation and Salford Museum and Art Gallery with my module leader and friends to garner a variety of information and capture some unforgettable memories.
Our lecturers have been greatly supportive throughout the course and guided me through all coursework and final projects. They also provided valuable insights and direction in challenging situations. Dr. Jane Killby and Dr. David Savill specifically assisted me every step of the way to successfully complete my assignments and projects.
Dr. Caroline Magennis, who led the 'Theory, Text Writing' and 'Bestsellers and Prize Winners' modules, held 1-2-1 sessions with me. She is a brilliant writer in the UK, and I learned so much from her.”

Academic experience as a literature student
“This course helped me to identify the theories of writing, to get practical knowledge of the publishing world and more. This knowledge is useful for my future publications. I am now a teaching assistant in the UK, and I'll be able to transfer my knowledge and learnings to my students.
In the professional practice module of the course, I was fortunate to write a journal article based on my previous project. We also had a unique archival visit with our module leaders. The journal article that I created as a part of this module is one of the most memorable and cherishing academic experiences. I have recently published this journal.”
Journey as an international student
“The first few days of university were Welcome Week and induction. We were warmly greeted and made comfortable by the staff and senior students, who guided us through the registration processes. I also visited the beautiful Peel Park and Media City campus on my first week.
It is genuinely an excellent and unforgettable lifetime achievement to be a student at the University of Salford. I would really recommend international students to begin their career journey with Salford to gain solid expertise with thorough professional guidance.”
Future plans
"Now I have finished my course in MA in Literature and Culture, I am working as a teaching assistant. I plan to take my education a step further and continue my studies by choosing to complete a PhD. My long-term plan is to write a remarkable book and win a literature prize!”
