In the line of duty: Abbie and Eve graduate with first class honours
Eve Adams and Abbie Tobin graduate with first class honours this summer in BSc Professional Policing after an enjoyable three years at the University of Salford.
They are part of the first-ever graduation cohort of the course, as the university continues to strengthen its relationship with Greater Manchester Police (GMP). The partnership, which began back in 2021, provides students with valuable learning and can include first-hand experience out on the streets as a police officer.
Eve, from Staffordshire, followed aspirations from an early age by joining the police cadets and studying public services at college.
“I’ve always wanted to work in public service. I initially joined as a cadet with Northamptonshire police, then went on to do public services at college and from there it was just the natural progression.”
Abbie was the first in her family to attend university and found the degree very rewarding.
“My parents both work in the prison service, so I’ve always felt a natural draw to policing,” she said. “I am very interested in the criminal justice system so to have my placement working in a prison was really interesting” she added.
Both women have received the Dr Charles Arewa Memorial Award. This is a new Honour which has been created in the memory of much loved staff member Dr Arewa, who died suddenly earlier this year. The Award has been set up by Charles’ colleagues and is awarded to those students who have produced outstanding final theses.
“Charles was well respected by so many, and it shocked us as a year group to hear the sad news of his passing,” said Eve.
Eve is now a special constable for GMP, working whilst studying, giving vital experience and being able to apply her learning skills to practice in ‘real life’.
Eve said how beneficial the course was: “We learnt lots in different training scenarios and former police officers came in and gave many inspirational and beneficial talks to the students.”
As well as practical elements of the course, Eve also said how grateful she was to her lecturer and personal tutor, Dr Ian Cummins, who teaches BSC Professional Policing.
“He’s an absolute legend and was always willing to help, he always knows how to help you. He taught me so much; we couldn't have done it without him and all his support.” Abbie echoed her praise of Dr Cummins too.
With many great relationships built through placement, Eve hopes to work in different areas in the police force, particularly the traffic and firearms section.
When asked what Eve’s piece or advice to current or future students would be, she said:
“Go for it and work hard. You get out what you put in. Enjoy the journey too.”
