Student Support - bursaries
Our students join us from all over the world, at various stages in life, each determined to achieve their dreams. As a university, we're committed to ensuring our students, staff, alumni, and local community have access to the resources they need to reach their potential, whether through financial assistance, wellbeing services, or academic support.
Care experienced
A care leaver is a young person who has been in the care of, or given accommodation by, their local authority; care experienced is a wider term for anyone who has experienced care under the age of 18.
Our bursary is offered to care-experienced students to support their learning and living costs whilst at university; each student receives a £1,100 cash bursary each year for the minimum duration of their course, including a foundation year.
We are proud to have supported 77 students with this bursary during the 2022/23 academic year, and 86 students for the 2023/24 academic year to date.
Hear from one of our students on how the bursary has impacted them:
"I'd like to show my gratitude and appreciation for the Care Leaver Bursary that is made possible due to the generosity of the donor community.
The bursary has greatly impacted my life, as I needed new equipment and clothing for university, as well as transportation costs; the bursary has allowed me to be able to get the essentials and I'm able to get to and from university superbly.
I am tremendously grateful to you and the donors. Thank you very much for the excellent work you have put in."

Sanctuary Scholarships
Sanctuary Scholarships are for those from forced migrant backgrounds who face a barrier to accessing university because Home Office regulations surrounding immigration status prevent them from accessing Student Finance England.
Successful applicants must be completing a full-time degree and will receive a £1,100 bursary per academic year.
We're proud to be one of the first of a growing number of universities to offer these scholarships. During the 2022/23 academic year, we supported 12 students and currently in the 2023/24 we are supporting a total of 20 students this academic year (2023/24).
