Campus disruptions

Currently, there are several improvement works taking place across our campuses and around Salford, which can cause disruptions from time to time. To help prepare your journey to campus, we've listed the current and upcoming works and how this might impact your travel and experience on campus. Below you can find:

  • Improvement works happening on and around campus
  • Travel disruptions around Manchester and Salford
  • Updates about new campus buildings

Current works around campus

High voltage and fibre installation

High voltage/fibre installation is currently taking place across Peel Park campus. The work will increase our electrical capacity and support our transition to net zero carbon by 2038.

Enabling work for GMIoT

From Monday 2 September, you'll start to see enabling works for Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) Building, including the removal of an existing attenuation tank (designed to collect excess rainwater) behind the SEE building, the installation of new ones and service diversions.

Pathways repairs around The Old Fire Station

From Monday 12 August 2024, work will commence to repair the uneven pedestrian pathway surfaces across Albion Place (the area behind the Salford Cenotaph), including routes to and from The Old Fire Station Bakery and Brewery.

Works are expected to take between six to eight weeks to complete (depending on the weather) and the areas being repaired will be cordoned off for this time. Alternative routes should be used if possible during the period of the work, and all other pedestrian routes will remain open for use with care.

Car parking improvements

We're continuing to look at how we can improve car parking on campus. We've been installing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in all car parks to help us understand usage, looking at how technology can identify vacant parking spaces and the exploration of interim parking areas on and around campus. Travel and connectivity to and from the university in general is under review, and we will update you in due course. In the meantime, if you have any issues or questions please contact ps24 regarding car parking on campus.

Also, if you drive to campus, please respect our local residents and avoid parking on driveways and side streets. We have 2,250 parking spaces on campus, including 90 designated for disabled parking.

Travel disruptions

Rochdale to Manchester

In September, Network Rail are replacing Castleton Bridge that takes trains over the M62, near Rochdale. This means there will be road closures and rail replacements buses between Rochdale and Manchester. More details below.

Buses will replace trains between Rochdale and Manchester whilst the work takes place. You journey might also be affected if you’re travelling from places like Leeds and Bradford to Manchester, as trains will be unable to divert and may be replaced by buses.

Road works and closures for Salford Rise

Preparation works for Salford Rise start on Monday 16 September until 26 November 2024. During this time there will be traffic restrictions and full road closures at various points on Lissadel and Scarsdale Street, plus a temporary closure of Frederick Road throughout November (diversion routes will be in place). The restrictions have been sequenced to help minimise disruption.

Our Frederick Road campus is being developed to expand our in-house clinics, to support your learning and experience and to support our wider community’s health needs. We've recently received planning permission of our new Health Building. Work will begin in late October 2024 and the target completion date is Autumn 2026.
