In a nutshell
The course covers the essential practical and technical processes involved in Construction Project Management. It provides you with a good understanding of the role of the construction management professional and the varied tasks associated with the role, as well as offering an underpinning to the professional management side of a construction project.
The delivery of the programme will be full-time or part-time; predominantly face to face lectures, with some online delivery where this style suits the module, and guided tutorials to support learning in both the academic and on-site arenas. Methods of assessment may vary but generally will be a mix of coursework, project-based groupwork, examinations and presentations. Assessments are based on both live projects and specific built environment scenarios to ensure students gain the relevant skills to apply and contextualise theory and practice in both an academic and industrial setting.
You will learn and develop areas within the role of the Construction Project Manager, including:
- How project management tools are used to supervise and monitor resources including materials, time, cost and labour on a construction project
- Control of quality of works on a construction project
- The control of health and safety standards on construction projects
- Recording, control and reporting of progress on a construction project
- The minimisation of the environmental impact of construction projects
- Assisting commercial staff with the monitoring of costs on a construction project

All about the course
You will be introduced to the built environment sector and its processes and will develop your practical competencies and industry knowledge. Course content includes sustainable construction technology, legal and contractual procedures, and management.
There is a particular focus on recent innovations, including modern methods of construction and digital process management (e.g. building information modelling), as well as an emphasis on the significance of the sustainability agenda relating to the built environment.
You'll also develop your problem-solving skills - the course will allow you to build your knowledge to enable you to provide sound and justified management advice and guidance in a variety of different formats. To aid this, you'll be encouraged to develop your technical writing and presentation skills throughout the course.
Introduction to Law and Regulatory Frameworks
You will be introduced to English law and relevant statutory requirements for studying for vocational qualifications in the construction and property professions. The module also introduces you to the workings of the English legal system, to the law relating to contracts and to the regulatory framework affecting the use, management and development of land, in particular, planning, building control and the CDM regulations.
Technology 1
You will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to describe, explain, evaluate, compare and apply building construction techniques and materials used in typical low-rise, domestic type buildings, with a focus on contemporary construction techniques. You will develop a systematic understanding of the sustainable practices involved in building construction.
Site Supervision and Operational Management
This module brings together the skills required to successfully manage a construction site. Giving you the necessary skills to manage a large and diverse group of people and processes involved in a construction site. You will develop skills that enable you to monitor and assess their work, ensuring the success of the project and the safety of those working on the project. Some of the topics you will undertake in this module include defect identification and notification, regulatory areas such as Health and Safety, people and performance management skills, quality monitoring and control, site meetings and contractor and sub-contractor relations.
Introduction to Construction Management
Through this module you will gain experience of relevant management and planning software tools through the application of industry specific ICTs such as Microsoft Project, Building Information Modelling and appropriate design delivery software CAD. You will be able to demonstrate the importance of the legislative environment, including the consequences of health, safety and welfare, and apply current management tools and techniques to mitigate relevant issues that may occur on a construction project. You will understand ethnic and cultural diversity issues and current codes of practice in the industry and their implications for ethical practice. You will appreciate the relevance of social, economic and environmental sustainability and recognise the impact of this on a building’s carbon emissions and ability provide a comfortable environment for the end user. This module will also enable you to engage with industry through a series of industrial guest lectures supporting and enhancing the project brief.
Economics and Management
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic economic concepts and principles of the economic environment in which the construction and property industry operates and knowledge of management theories in the construction context. You will be able to discuss the key role of the construction industry in the economy, current economic issues and management challenges in the construction and property context.
Construction Management Project 1
This module will enable you to identify and use appropriate learning-how-to-learn strategies that are applicable for the programme of study. You will be able to recognise and apply discipline specific knowledge and practice to solve discipline related project tasks on an individual and team basis. You will identify and apply ethical codes of behaviour appropriate to built environment professional practice. You will also gain experience applicable ICT technologies relevant to their field of study.
Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.

EMPLOYMENT
Following completion of the programme graduates will use this course to gain the skills and knowledge required to advance their careers and undertake a range of Project Management roles, particularly for careers in the construction industry.
The university of Salford, particularly the School of Science, Engineering and Environment have close working links with employers throughout the Northwest and primarily in the Manchester area. How to get accepted on the CertHE Construction Project Management course
APPLICANT PROFILE
Applicants should have a passion for the Built Environment and a desire to gain an understanding of how projects are procured, built and delivered. Students should have a willingness to engage in group activities, be curious about the impact of the Built Environments carbon footprint and enthused by the positive impact we can have on people's lives, places we inhabit and the wider socio-economic environment.
In addition to our academic entry requirements, we also look for certain characteristics in our applicants. These include focus, determination, communication skills, and a willingness to find solutions. Possessing these characteristics will not only help you to fulfil your potential at university but are also an essential requisite for a successful career in the built environment.
Applicants could be working in the Built Environment and should hold a suitable L3 National Diploma at MPP in a construction related area.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
If you are an international student and not from a majority English speaking country, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with no element below 5.5. We also accept a range of other English language qualifications. If you do not have the English language requirements, you could take the Pre-Sessional English course to gain entry onto this degree.
GCSE
English Language and Mathematics at grade C/level 4 or above (or equivalent). You must fulfil our GCSE entry requirements as well as one of the requirements listed below.

You will need 104 UCAS points to study on this programme.
Level 3
BTEC National Diploma MPP in a related subject.
Salford Alternative Entry Scheme (SAES)
We welcome applications from students who may not meet the stated entry criteria but who can demonstrate their ability to pursue the course successfully. Once we have received your application we will assess it and recommend it for SAES if you are an eligible candidate.
There are two different routes through the Salford Alternative Entry Scheme and applicants will be directed to the one appropriate for their course. Assessment will either be through a review of prior learning or through a formal test.
The cost of studying CertHE Construction Project Management
Your tuition fees are regulated by the UK government who has proposed changes to tuition fees for UK students studying in England from 1 August 2025. The fee stated reflects this proposed change but remains subject to parliamentary approval. Your tuition fees may increase in your first and each subsequent year of your programme to the maximum amount permitted by UK law or regulation for that academic year.
